The novel follows his life--and loves, since Robbins' books generally contain a lot of descriptive, sometimes cringe-inducing, sexual escapades, and this one is no exception--from Russia to the Caribbean and finally to Cuba, where he fights gangsters and dictators to build a bootlegging empire and eventually struggles to save the life of the only woman he has ever truly loved. About the Author

Born in New York City, Harold Robbins is one of the world's bestselling authors, writing novels that often mirrored his own experiences and that were peopled by characters he had met. He dided at the age of eighty-one in Palm Springs, California.

Junius Podrug was selected by the Robbins Estate to carry on the ideas, uncompleted works, and tradition of Harold Robbins because he was both a friend of Harold's and a writer whose books Harold admired. He is the author of Harold Robbins ' Sin City and Heat of Passion.

Keeps you reading up all night.

I started reading this book two days ago and am half way through it. I was hooked from page 1. It has heaps of relevant history (I am a history buff and loved revisiting what I had learnt in high school about Russia's 900 day seige). Junius Podrug bring's this Harold Robbins novel alive with his smooth, fast-paced narration. It also gave me tremendous insight into the Carribean, which I have a fascination for,as well as the exotic Havana, Cuba. A brilliant, masterpiece.

Harold Robbins Lives On

The Betrayers, a symphony, a story so smooth; and Junius Podrug keeps Robbins legacy very much alive.

Nick is the love child of a british and russian communist visionaries, who move to Russia for hopes of building a better society. The communist system kills nicks father and his mother starves to death in the deadly siege of Leningrad, Russia, by Nazi Germany.

Nick grows up in a brutal Russian Orphanage, where he learns more about life then in any school. He becomes a delivery boy for the gang leader who illegally produces and sells cheaply made vodka at his farm. Nick gets caught by the NKVD (the soviet secret service) for illegal activities. He is in jail, about to hear a death sentence when he is thrown a lifeline by a British lawyer.

The lawyer was sent by Nicks grandfather, who was english. He passed away, but had never seen his grandson, and his last wish was to get nick out of the Soviet union and be sent to his remaining family: Nicks father's step sister and her husband in the British Hondurus.

His half Aunt is a kind woman who loves her abusive husband Jack. Despite quarrells among Jack and Nick they managed to stay together, untill Nick buys another farm in the area and starts manufacturing vodka and rum. This is the start of his career. His quest for making money through liquor takes him from Hondurus, to Cuba, to Dominican republic. His business takes him to Santo Domingo, where he meets luz, a woman with dark secrets. He ends up battling dictators with their armies for this woman who he falls in love dearly.

A stunning historical thriller

This is clearly not the handwritten work of Mr. Robbins that much we know. I don't even know if I can say it was that inspired by him. What I do know however is that this is a very strong work all around, one that holds up very well without the Robbins tag. It was a very well-written piece of cold war fiction and only wished it was a little longer. Rich in all the right ingredients: action, drama, intrigue, money, greed and of course, sex, all interwoven with well researched historical information. I do however gripe over the fact that it didn't allow for a lot of character development, but I suppose that is what we are to expect from a book of its length. In any case, very solid effort I think.

Essential Reference for Every Engineer

I just recently passed the mechanical PE exam (fluids discipline), and I thought I would share the studying strategy that seemed to work for me. The very first thing you should do is purchase this book, the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual (MERM), even if you do not plan to take the PE for several years. This is an excellent book that is useful for any mechanical engineer to have. Plus, if you begin to use it now, it will only help to make you more comfortable with it for the exam.

Begin your study about 5-6 months before the exam. At this point you should also purchase the associated Practice Problems for the MERM. Each day, read a chapter and then try to work the practice problems from that chapter. This will take you about 1-2 hours per day. The key is to not burn yourself out, so begin early and only do a set amount per day. On some days when the chapter is short, or you have extra time you could read and work problems for an extra chapter or two. Also, I decided to skip the math and statistics chapters because I felt like I still remembered the basics and there are no general math questions on the exam. So if you feel the same way, you can eliminate 12-13 chapters right off the bat. At this pace, in about 3 months you will have read the entire book (around 1500 pages) and at least attempted every single practice problem. At this point you will be in full panic mode, because you won’t feel comfortable with any of the practice problems because as I said, they are much harder than what is on the exam. Relax! The practice problems for the MERM are infinitely more complicated than what you will encounter on the exam. So do not worry too much if you don’t exactly know how to do them. Just try to work each problem, if you get stuck just read through the solution and try to understand. Keep in mind that no one can work all the problems in that book, so you are no different. Just do your best. When you have finished the book, it should be right about the time that you have to choose your specific mechanical discipline for the exam. Since you have seen all the types of problems, you should be able to make an informed decision on which of the three that you are best at.

As a general rule of thumb for the exam, anything you can think of that will save you any time is worth it. The MERM is absolutely jam-packed with charts, tables, graphs, etc. As you are reading through and working problems, you will start to notice you refer to some of them fairly often. It’s a good idea to put a tab on the page where the useful information is located. By the time I took the exam, my MERM had tons of tabs.

When you have finished the MERM and its practice problems, purchase ALL THREE (fluids, mechanical systems, HVAC) sample problems and solution booklets from the NCEES. The first 40 questions are exactly the same in the three booklets, but the next 40 will be different. It’s still worth it to buy all three, because in the morning session of the exam, you could encounter any of these problems. Make yourself out a schedule where you work 10-15 problems per day. This time, you will need to actually be able to do the problems, unlike the MERM problems. These problems are designed to represent what is on the test, and also to be able to be completed in 6 minutes. You will start to feel a lot more comfortable at this point because the questions are much easier than what you’ve seen so far. Work all 160 questions over and over in groups of 10-15 per day until the day of the exam. By now you should be very comfortable, and ready to tackle whatever they throw at you.

Update in response to some questions: On test day, you will see people walk into the exam with dozens of books. Some even stand up all the books vertically on their table like a little library bookshelf. You will immediately wonder if you did not bring enough material. Rest assured! If you go into the test relying on this many books, then you are in trouble. There simply isn't enough time to think about which book to open and then search for the answer. I went into the exam with only the following materials and it was more than enough:

Tips to pass the Mechanical Engineering PE Exam

I passed the October 2015 Mechanical Engineering PE exam (I chose to take the Mechanical Systems and Materials in the afternoon), and I would like to share with you how I prepared for the exam. I did not enroll in a course, but I used the following four resources, all purchased on Amazon:
(1) Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, 13th Ed
(2) PE Exam Review for Mechanical Systems and Materials: PE Review Book for ME
(3) PE Mechanical Engineering: Mechanical Systems and Materials Practice Exam
(4) Six-Minute Solutions for Mechanical PE Exam Mechanical Systems and Materials Problems, 2nd Ed

The first of these four resources, of which this review concerns, is by far the most essential. I repeatedly used Lindeburg's Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual during the actual test. While the other three resources were helpful, and I recommend that you purchase and use them, the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual was by far the most helpful. Most of the chapters contain material that is "fair game" on the exam. You can compare what the exam covers versus the chapters in this book. You will notice that some chapters contain material that is no longer covered on the exam. I skipped these chapters. For the chapters that did contain material on the exam (which was a majority of the book), I read them completely, and I worked through all examples. Most example problems have solutions in both S.I. and U.S. systems, and this is helpful because the exam can use either system. I switched back and forth: if I solved one example problem using S.I., then I would solve the next using the U.S. system. Furthermore, to get extra studying time, I studied during my lunch break at work. I ate for about 15 minutes and studied for about 45 minutes. If you do this 5 days per week, then that is an extra 3.75 hours of study per week that you did not have to do at home. Plus, when you bring a really big book to work and read it, people will look and think you look really smart.

I will also review the other three resources listed in this review. In my opinion, the afternoon exam is orders of magnitude harder than the morning exam, so prepare for the afternoon exam even more than the morning exam. Best of luck, I wish you well!

Take this to the PE, along with a few others...

Great preparation guide and a great general reference. Spend time with it before the exam so you know where everything (generally) is, and tab out the book so you know how to get to places you need to use. A good rule of thumb that I used was, any time I took a practice exam and used the MERM for a lookup, I stickynoted that page, knowing that I needed to tab it later.

The book takes you back to first principles, and derives many of the equations you will need to find and use on the exam. It also rigorously uses constants of gravity in the USCS versions of equations. This may inspire you to needlessly divide a pound-force by a pound-mass just for the sake of clearing out units. However, this may be useful to you should gravity not be a constant in the particular problem you're working.

It treated me well as my last-ditch effort to get an equation I needed - and in fact it saved my butt at least a couple of times. However, getting those equations to work for me took some trial and error because they weren't in the final form I needed to use.

Cameron Hydraulic Data and the ASHRAE Pocket Guide may serve you better for equations that are ready to use right away. Cameron Hydraulic Data especially has a number of equations that you just insert your flowrate in GPM and your pipe size in inches, and out pops your velocity in FPM or your velocity head in feet. Shortcut equations, easy. Not a strong point of the MERM. I went into the test with Cameron, ASHRAE Pocket Guide, ASHRAE Handbook 4-pack, my favorite Thermodynamics textbook (Cengel & Boles 4e from college), Property Tables from Cengel and Boles, and about 20-30 pages of my own handwritten thermo, fluids and HVAC notes. That was enough, I don't think the MERM alone would have been.

Carole M. Counihan is Professor of Anthropology and the Director of Women's Studies at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. She is currently the editor of Food and Foodways. I love this book

I love this book. I have been living in Italy for 13 years now and it was like listening to my Florentine mother-in-law's stories all over again. It has also been helpful in understanding the roles of women married to Florentine men no matter where they come from themselves. Interesting stories are told in a realistic way bringing World War II and the good times of the 1960s alive.

Why we love Florence and Tuscany

Have you ever wandered through a Florentine neighborhood before lunch, smelling indescribably good scents wafting through open windows, hearing families talk to each other, and wondering what it is they are doing, and what they are eating? If you have, this book is for you. Around the Tuscan Table is an endlessly interesting and very readable saga of how modern Florentine families and Florentine food have changed in the last few decades, rendering the mysterious stone streets and people of Florence infinitely more real for the traveler and Italophile. And this ethnography also provides great recipes for simple, tasty Florentine food; the straccoto recipe has become a family favorite. Straccoto is Italian pot roast, with the sauce served over pasta as a first course. It is delicious.

This book is a marvelous antidote to the endless up-market mythologizing of Tuscany. It seems that we simply can't get away from `Tuscany as the promised land' - a place where rich Brits and Americans can buy a farmhouse and pretend, a la Marie Antoinette, to be earth-grimed farmers - of artisanal olive oils. Tuscany has become a kind of iconic play-land for the wealthy and bored cosmopolitan. But what of the Tuscan people? As a frequent traveler to Tuscany, I am thrilled that this book has been published. For too long the writing of all things Tuscan has been from the perspective of the expatriate - the �migr� viewing a mythologized culture viewing the �migr�, with the Tuscan landscape and people somehow magically preserved in a state of 19th century splendor, or squalor, depending on the purse of the observing expat and the state of the `villa' she or he has purchased. Dr. Counihan's book provides us with a welcome picture of how Florentines live and eat - as well as some of the best and simplest recipes for home cooked Tuscan meals available.

Rather than assuming an unchanging social and physical landscape, Dr. Counihan chronicles the changes in place, attitudes, habits, and social relations over decades among the family of her ex-husband. Her training is in anthropology, and she is a well-known and highly-respected scholar of food and identity, so it is inevitable that her book should focus on food as a metaphor for social change through time. However, this is no dry anthropological tome, it is readable, interesting, and highly informative. By relying on the many years that she lived in Italy, married to an Italian, she is able to give us a picture of Italian life not available to many Americans. She also teaches us about food change - how prosperity has altered Italian habits and attitudes, and how Italians feel about the many changes their country has undergone since World War II. We, as outsiders and traveling Americans, often view the Italian people as somehow unchanging, unmoving in culture and tradition. This book changes that perspective, allowing us to view the dynamism and modernity of Florentine families - and to have a much better understanding of why the streets of Florence smell so good at lunchtime... and why the mystique of Tuscan food and livelihoods is so compelling to Americans.

Fantastically delicious

Counihan set out to examine Florentine foodways through interviews with twenty-three members of an extended family broken down into, an older generation, a middle generation, and a younger generation. Counihan lived in Italy from 1968-1984; she was immersed in the culture and more importantly immersed within the family portrayed in this book. She points out that anthropologists have paid little attention to Italy's rich and diverse urban culture. To recify this, she seeks to fill this gap in anthropological research by focusing on food to discuss Florentine identity, family, gender, history, culture, and society. Even though Counihan's book is geared toward fellow anthropologists her writing style is accessible to all. The book is easily read and understood, she also avoids using the technical jargon that is so common to academic writing and often quite confusing to people outside of the discipline.

This book is a fascinating portrayal of Florentine cuisine and culture from the perspective of ordinary citizens. Counihan's close relationship with the interviewee's allows for an intimate portrayal of the Florentine foodways through their food-based memories. The book is well-written, engaging, well researched, and most of all entertaining.

Excellent broad based intro text

This text is very clearly written, and an absolute must as a reference for the fundamentals of ceramics. The text ties basic priciples of physics to the structure and behavior of ceramics. The text is ideal for late undergrad, early graduate studies - and is also perfect for scientists and engineers without a background in Materials Engineering *because* it draws on basic physics to clearly cover the topic. Especially useful are the numerous examples within the chapters to highlight important ideas, and the last six chapters - which give important infrmation on electrical, optical, and mechanical properties of ceramics.

Dr. Barsoum has covered all the bases in this well thought out and beautifully organized book! The author makes the field of ceramics interesting even to people new to the field. This book was used in a course I took, and I will not sell it because it is such an authoritative reference source. There are no other books that compare to Fundamentals of Ceramics.

OK, Nice book

I thought this book needed more. It is missing yogi Gupta's personal details, he skims over his start as a lawyer, his breif marriage, comming to America and then his rise to power. But nothing in it tells us how and who taught him. i like the book but think he needs a sequel on how he started his ashram in NY and how he started his group of followers.

WOW!! If you need to read one book on yoga this is it!

I am not into yoga but got a copy of Gupta's text as a gift. At first it sort of challanges you, but then you start to realize how our lives can change. Yogi Gupta, is so honest an open it makes you want to start the steps he indicates. Yogi Gupta said Yoga saved his life from a road of wanton destruction, wine, women, neglect of his sole but he made the change I believe I can too. This is the christmas gift of the year!

You will love this book its a "nitty gritty" look at Yoga and its power to change and extend your life. Mr. Gupta has really put together an excellant book that should be a refference tool in every ones health book collection. Yogi Gupta should release a second text soon on how Yoga helped his marriage. I cant wait!

I felt as if I had found kindred spirits in Renee, Paloma, and Kakuro, old friends whom I had just met. It was joy to watch them find each other, but I must also warn you that the ending, while hopeful, is not entirely happy.

This is a very remarkable book, full of deep (but not pretentious) philosophical rumination disguised as the day-to-day trivialities of life in an unremarkable apartment building in Paris.

Also, the translation is itself quite remarkable. What must have been very idiomatic French has been rendered as equally idiomatic English (American English, at that). Since I don't read French, I can't be certain about the accuracy of the translation, but I had to keep reminding myself that it was not originally written in English.

A Thought Provoking Look at the Challenges Facing the Gifted Mind Trying to Assimilate

This book started off very strong; it had me laughing, contemplating and nodding in agreement. I often thought this person is fingering through the index files between my ears and selectively finding thoughts worthy of print. I understood the main characters and their insights. With such a strong introduction, why only 4 stars? That has to do with the ending. The author set the stage for the moral of the story but it had already been conveyed through the excellent dialogue and compassion of the characters. The surprise was more of an, "Oh, really?"

The ending aside, I loved this book and the message it conveyed. Seeing the world differently, seeing connections where others don't, is not necessarily a gift for the person so endowed. The gifted athlete is encouraged to excel but our school system, and society, too often press the gifted student toward mediocrity and despair. I see changes for the better but it is still early. Sharing an insight with someone who understands is a precious thing for a gifted individual. This book explores the depths of this unfortunate anomaly in the journals of two highly gifted individuals, an older woman and a young girl. The author's perception of the world, and the people in it, had me beside myself at times saying, "Precisely, well done!"

If you are gifted, or have a gifted child, I highly recommend this book; it won't disappoint. You will see much of what you have experienced come to life through this author's work.

Elegant, Profound, and Sublime

I am in awe of this book, possibly because its author paid much importance to the inner lives of the characters, unlike some action-filled novels lacking in depth.

In the story, Renée Michel and Paloma Josse are the two main characters, who although living in the same apartment building do not know about each other and how much they are alike until more than halfway through the book.

Renée Michel is a 54-year-old concierge from humble beginnings but with a developed mind and tastes who hides behind her vocation. Paloma is the 12-year-old, soon-to-be-13, who comes from a rich well-educated family; she despises her family, their snobbery, and the life she is being forced to live. Both Renée and Paloma concentrate and reflect on the nature of true beauty, art, and the meaning of life and death.

Without giving much about the plot, I can only say that when one of the tenants in the building die and his apartment is bought by a Japanese man who understands and befriends both ladies, and then the two learn about each other and connect. The story has a sad but poignant ending.

Although the novel has an immense amount of sophisticated cultural, philosophical, and enlightening thought, it also has a delicately balanced emotional side to it with gentle and reflective twists and turns and remarkably touching scenes at its end.

The story is written from the two viewpoints of Renée and Paloma. The viewpoints are in different chapters and in two different typefaces; thus, it is easy to know who is the speaker. The characters are wonderfully developed and in addition to the original theme of what makes life worth living, the themes of hypocrisy, class consciousness, and the importance of arts and letters in a life make this a unique novel.

I loved this novel for its delicateness yet at the same time its intensity and for its referrals to cultural icons and thoughts and the characters’ musings on them. There are some things about the characters that coincide with who I am. This, too, may be part of the reason why I enjoyed reading this book so much.
