WRITING OK, FACTS NOT SO MUCH

This is a self-professed general reader's history of the Tudor dysnasty by a man with a background in English literature and journalism. Predictably, it is well written. Where it falls down is in the factual content, especially the religious aspect, which is a common problem in today's secular society.
The sectarian struggle in Europe was a key element of English history in the sixteenth century and, to understand the issues, it is necessary to understand the Roman Catholic-Lutheran-Calvin stances which eventually amalgamated into Anglicanism.
Contrary to what the book states, Luther did not post his 95 Theses on the door of Wittenberg Cathedral (it was not a cathedral), he did not perceive himself nor was he perceived by most others as a "radical reformer," his advice re bigamy (or something like it) was directed to Phillip of Hesse and not Henry VIII, his books were not written "mainly in Latin," he did not advocate that priests have no more power than any layman (Augustana XIV), he was not contemptuous of the idea of an ecclesiastical hierarchy, he did not think that the purpose of scriptural admonishments (Law) was ONLY to show that such admonishments could not be kept and, above all, he did not contend that men were "predestined to salvation or damnation and can do nothing to alter their fate" (this is Calvinism - Jacques Barzun in "From Dawn to Decadence" got it wrong, too). Any educated person should know these things.
On the topic of secularism - Harold Holzer, considered these days to be a Lincoln scholar, acknowledged in a book review a few years ago that Abraham Lincoln's turn of phrase re house divided showed that he was adept at metaphors. The phrase actually was first used by Christ to refute the charge of the scribes and Pharisees that His works were of the Devil. Certainly this connection was recognized in the Illinois of the 1850's, but today?

thin on research, heavy on exaggeration

First of all, this book is hardly "complete". Henry VIII's excesses (real and exaggerated) take up the lion's share of the book while the other Tudors including the great Elizabeth I are given little time. Next, did the writer do resarch or just watch the miniseries? If he did, it doesn't show. Do yourself a favor and ignore this waste of time unless you are a fan of garbage like "People" or the like.
