If you think John Lennon was the smart, arty Beatle while Paul was an empty head twittering prettily, this book will hip you to the facts. While John sat in the suburbs getting stoned to numb the pain of his imminent divorce, bachelor Paul was feeding his head by immersion in the London avant-garde. He pioneered the Beatles' experimental stuff, though his witty song-by-song account proves that it really was a 50-50 partnership--and some of the best innovations, like the snarling 1964 feedback intro to "I Feel Fine," happened by pure accident. Paul's insight into John's genius, which sprang from howling paranoia and a stark childhood, is still deeper than his insight into himself, but the book's true glory is its inside info on all those songs--the six tunes about John's marriage on A Hard Day's Night; Paul's heist of the "I Saw Her Standing There" bass line from Chuck Berry's "I'm Talking About You" (found on Berry's The Chess Box); the true meanings of "Norwegian Wood" (pine paneling, which the song's narrator burns to avenge the girl's refusal to have sex with him), "Got to Get You into My Life" ("you" is marijuana), and "Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da" ("life goes on" in Yoruba). McCartney unusually candid and open.......

John Lennon's untimely death was one of the great tragedies of Paul McCartney's life.

Not only did he lose a former best friend and half of the best songwriting team of all time, but the resultant rush to eulogise Lennon was often done at the expense of McCartney, whose own contribution was often trivialised.

This is McCartney's version of the history of the Beatles and their music. It is hard to imagine McCartney being insecure about anything, but he certainly seems territorial, protective and sensitive of his own legacy.

Perhaps the greatest injustice to McCartney was being inducted to Rock and Roll Hall of fame seven years after Lennon, in spite of being an equal contributor to the Beatles, and having a far more commercially successful solo career.

As far as the Lennon McCartney compositions go, there are a few surprises, for instance, he says he wrote the music to 'In My Life' a song which is obviously very Lennon but this actually makes sense. On many of the other Lennon songs he wrote the middle eight or the words of the last verse and vice versa. At times this seems petty, but to be fair he does give Lennon credit on some songs that are obviously strongly McCartney compositions such as the middle sections of Michelle and She's Leaving Home, and a 50/50 credit on I saw her standing there. On Eleanor Rigby he credits Lennon some of the lyrics to the final verse, although in the Anthology documentary he says the song is 100% his. The key to crediting any Lennon McCartney song is he who sung it wrote it or most of it.

The most interesting portions of this book are the direct quotations by McCartney about his life, his relationship with John and the other Beatles and his relationship with Linda, and his insights into John and the meaning of many of his songs which are the best I've read. He is surprisingly candid and open, compared to tv interviews where he has rarely allowed interviewers to get behind the McCartney persona.

Some of his comments about John are quite touching. The history of how he met Linda, and how their relationship developed is a compelling love story.

For instance we get to hear about the death of Paul's mother when he was 14, the tragic death of John's mother the business relationship with Brian Epstein, the Apple fiasco,the wrangling, the naivety of the Beatles in business matters, the loss of ownership of their songs and so forth.

As for Mr Miles himself, he is not the world's greatest writer, which is why I only give it 3 stars. The chapter on avantgarde London is the most boring thing I have ever read. He could easily have edited 100 pages out of this book without compromising the content.

In addition, he is obviously biased towards McCartney and disses Lennon by act and omission. He zeroes in on McCartney as a painter making him out to be a better artist than Lennon, and making the most pretensious comparisons between McCartney's art and classic painters.

He doesn't seem to understand that by undermining Lennon he is also undermining McCartney's credibility. Fortunately, McCartney's own comments are far more respectful, and seemingly objective.

In Mr Miles favour, I must say there are very few questions about McCartney that are left unanswered, and in spite of all its obvious flaws this is still the best psychological insight into Paul McCartney and John Lennon that I have read, so I would recommend this book. I would strongly recommend the books by Hunter Davies and Philip Norman. I hope this review was helpful.

Terrific Look Over The Wall Into McCartney's Private World!

Those of us who grew up watching the evolution of the Beatles and Paul McCartney will find this authoritative biography written by longtime friend Barry Miles a thought-provoking and interesting glimpse into many aspects of McCartney's otherwise quite private and personal life story. The view is startling, given the fact that so many in the media have forwarded the view that Paul was the lesser of the two main creative forces within the group. The account delivered here via a long-running series of interviews with Paul puts the lie to that notion, showing just how influential and fateful were Paul's contribution to the Lennon and McCartney writing genius. It also gives the fascinated reader a mind-boggling glimpse into the creative forces behind the individual songs, and travels knowingly along the historic path leading each of the "Fab Four" from poverty and obscurity to fabled fame and fortune. The result is a marvelous biography and an immensely entertaining reading experience.
The book is full of insider information about the genesis and sources of each of the songs and albums along the way, ranging from the creation of "I Saw Her Standing There" all the way to the "Long And Winding Road", at a time when the members of the group could barely stand to inhabit the same space for any period of time. We come to understand how the arrival of fame and fortune changed each of them forever, and although Paul's perspective is the only one aired here, one marvels at just how fair-minded and self-effacing he seems to be in assessing the values, contribution, and failings of each of the Beatles, himself included. It also shows just how instrumental the guidance of the so-called fifth Beatle, George Martin, was to both their initial breakthrough as well as to their successful riding of the wave-crest of fame that swept over them with such an enormous impact.
It also illustrates just how versatile and intelligent Paul has been, masterfully managing and orchestrating both his music and his fortune to become one of the wealthiest and most successful of the rock luminaries emerging from the sixties. And while his later music may have been disappointing in more critical terms, there is no doubting that he has been a continuing critical influence in the continuing evolution of popular music in the thirty years since the Beatles disbanded. Paul has had a rich and rewarding life, and has become a well-known benefactor of worthy causes and sometimes-reclusive widower of his long-time love and wife Linda, who died several years ago, succumbing to cancer. Still, the McCartney magic seems to shine, and this biography of him is both an interesting read and a privileged look behind the tall walls that he has built around himself in the last several decades. Given the crazed attack that fellow Beatle George Harrison suffered from a deluded fan, perhaps his concern about privacy and protection are all too well advised. Enjoy!

How the Music Evolved

Barry Miles' biography of Paul McCartney (Many Years from Now) is distinctive from other Beatles's biographies for its detailed look at how all that iconic music came together. As one example, McCartney gives an insider's view of where he was and what he was doing when he composed "Here, There, and Everywhere," as well as the off hand remark that playing one particular chord led to "Fool on the Hill." Improvisation and luck appeared to have influenced so many wonderful Beatles' tunes. By the time you've finished Miles' book, you'll begin to wonder whether some higher power was also a Beatles' fan.

Nanomaterials inevitably have bright prospects, but even now they play an important role in many areas of industry. Some of these new materials are commercially available and are used in off the shelf products, others are important model systems for physicochemical and materials science research. However, research findings and application data are not compiled in a single work. The Springer Handbook of Nanomaterials collects description and data of materials which have dimensions on the nanoscale. The description of nanomaterials follows the interplay of structure, properties, processing and applications mainly in their solid phase. The chapters were arranged according to the classical materials-science classifications: carbon materials, metals, ceramics, composites, and biomaterials. About the Author
Robert Vajtai is a Faculty Fellow in the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Materials Science at Rice University, Houston, USA. His scientific interests cover synthesis, processing, and characterization of physical and chemical properties of new material forms and structures, mainly nanostructured materials, nanocomposites and nanomaterials; as well as applications of these materials in thermal management, energy storage, MEMS, and electronic devices. He received his MS degree in Physics and his Doctor's degree in Solid-State Physics from the University of Szeged, Hungary, in 1986 and 1997, respectively. From 1987 to 2002 he was a Faculty Member of the Experimental Physics Department of Szeged University, Hungary. He also spent sabbatical time as a Fellow of the Swedish Institute in The Angstrom Laboratory in Uppsala, Sweden, from 1998 to 1999; as an Eotvos Fellow at the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland from 1995 to 1996 and he also visited the Max Planck Institute in Gottingen, Germany in 1993 via a Max Planck Fellowship. He was rewarded by the Bolyai Fellowship of the Hungarian Scientific Academy for 1999-2000. Before joining Rice University, Dr. Vajtai spent eight years at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he was a Laboratory Manager at the Rensselaer Nanotechnology Center managing the nanoparticle generation by inert-gas deposition and the carbon nanotechnology laboratories. Dr. Vajtai is on the Editorial Board of the journals Nanopages and Fluctuations and Noise Letters.

This is the best and most comprehensive single source book on nanotechnology involving the chemistry, biophysics,, and tissue engineering of nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanofilaments, and ceramics. The organic chemistry behind the synthesis of these materials is discussed with reference to their use, in medicine, surgery, and other technologies of chemical engineering. Fullerenes, hexagonal constructs, and polyhedral innovations are described in several hundred pages. Full color illustrations include tables, graphs, charts, and chemical structures are presented making this reference very readable.

Metals and metal alloy chemistry and engineering is covered in several chapters alone. Both organic and inorganic chemistry of these macromolecular structures is described throughout the book. Hollow tubes and filament carbon molecules are presented. Bone and tissue implants are described later in the discussions. Applications to civil engineering and orthopaedic surgery receive a fairly comprehensive treatment. In order to facilitate the reading of Dickinson's poems and to reveal the values and assumptions behind the poet's manipulations of language, Miller examines in this grammar how specific elements of the poet's style tend to function in various contexts. Because many, especially modernist, poets use some of the same techniques, the grammar throws light on the poetic syntax of other writers as well.

In the course of her analysis, Miller draws not only on traditional historical and linguistic sources but also on current sociolinguistic studies of gender and speech and on feminist descriptions of women's writing. Dickinson's language, she concludes, could almost have been designed as a model for twentieth-century theories of what a women's language might be. As a critical examination of the relationship between linguistic style and literary identity in America's greatest woman poet, Emily Dickinson: A Poet's Grammar provides a significant addition to feminist literary studies.

Terrific Help To Understand Emily Dickinson

Cristanne Miller, who is now English department head at State University of New York in Buffalo, authored this book before she was such a giant among Emily Dickinson scholars and professors. It's easy to see in this fairly early work why Miller has found such high regard in literary circles. Aspects of Dickinson's strategies are organized and approached very systematically. Without assuming that she can divine the mind of Dickinson, Miller takes her readers as nearly inside the tactical thoughts of the poet as I think is possible. Those who enjoy Emily Dickinson poetry will thank their lucky stars for the "leg up" on understanding the poems after reading "A Poet's Grammar."

Good book on keeping your word

I read this book after picking it up at a garage sale a long time ago. It is an excellent book on the key things that sales people struggle with. How do I sell without lying? How do I keep integrity with what I say I will do when there are other factors out of my control? etc etc.

It has a couple key stories that really make it worthwhile to me....paying back your debts, allowing your integrity to sell your service/product, and in general focusing on how integrity can make things happen.

No question i found the book very insightful and reinforced things, that may be quaint, but are obviously hard to follow when you look around at your peers.

Catchy title, but not much else.

Not quite the interesting story I anticipated. I'm not sure the average person, workng their way up in the business world could prevail time and time again without the "something" behind them. It's m-o-n-e-y! There are "gaps" in the story which are a give away that there is much more than "integrity" that allowed the author to prevail.

I enjoyed the personal feel of the book as the author takes us through his personal life as opposed to preaching what to do and how to do it. Enjoyable read.

In this second edition, Lee provides significant updates in view of recent developments.

Among the developments have been an added precision required for the argument against the gradualist position, the position that a human being only gradually comes to be; significant developments in embryology strengthening the case that at fertilization a new human individual comes to be; and further refinements to the argument that some abortions are non-intentional killing.

Lee argues that what is at stake in this debate about how to treat unborn human beings is whether we will or will not recognize the fundamental equal dignity possessed by every human being, simply by virtue of being the kind of being he or she is.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Patrick Lee holds the John N. and Jamie D. McAleer Chair of Bioethics and is the director of the Institute of Bioethics at Franciscan University Steubenville. He is known nationally as a keynote speaker and author of contemporary ethics, especially on controversies regarding human life and marriage. Lee is the coauthor of Body-Self Dualism in Contemporary Ethics and Politics, and the author of numerous published articles.

This book addresses the moral question of abortion: is it ever morally right to procure an abortion, to help procure one, or to perform one? Patrick Lee surveys the main philosophical arguments in favor of the moral permissibility of abortion and refutes them point by point. In a calm and philosophically sophisticated manner, he presents a powerful case for the pro-life position and a serious challenge to all of the main philosophical arguments in behalf of the pro-choice position. Lee's method is strictly philosophical, with special attention given to authors in the broadly analytical school of thought. He contends that what is killed in abortion is indeed an individual human being, that this being is not different from us in any morally significant way, and that, as a result, it can rightly be called a "person." Attempts to argue otherwise are carefully presented and criticized, as are other attempts morally to justify abortion. Lee first sets out the prima facie case against abortion: abortion is wrong because it is the intentional killing of human persons. Then, chapter by chapter, he examines and refutes the main challenges to that argument. In Chapter One he analyzes the argument that abortion is (sometimes) right because what is conceived does not become a person until after birth. Chapter Two examines and criticizes the position that some early abortions are morally right because during gestation the embryo or fetus only gradually acquires moral worth. Chapter Three focuses on the position that in the early stages of pregnancy the embryo is not a human individual. In Chapter Four, Lee examines and criticizes the position of Judith Jarvis Thomson and Francis Kamm--that abortion is not always intentional killing but is sometimes the case of not providing life support and therefore morally justifiable. Chapter Five presents a critique of the consequentialist or utilitarian argument for abortion. Lee's dispassionate examination of the issues, his use of neutral language, and his fair and objective presentation of opposing views recommend this book to all who are interested in the philosophical and moral question of abortion. It will be especially useful as a textbook for seminary and graduate courses in medical ethics and as a supplementary text in undergraduate courses.

An excellent defense of the pro-life position.

"Abortion and Unborn Human Life" is quite simply one of the best philosophical defenses of the pro-life position. The book is impressive in its clarity, its complete avoidance of emotional rhetoric, and Lee's willingness to address the most sophisticated pro-choice arguments.
Lee's book will be welcomed mainly by those who are interested in the _philosophical_ issues behind the abortion debate. There are no slogans, no sound-bites, no pictures of thumb-sucking foetuses here -- merely calm, rational argumentation. This is a refreshing change, and it is precisely what the abortion debate generally lacks.
As a pro-choicer, I do think Lee's arguments are flawed. His arguments in favour of foetal personhood are particularly tendentious. Nevertheless, the book presents a formidable challenge to the pro-choice position, and interested parties owe it to themselves to read it.

I have read a number of books on the abortion issue (both pro/con), and this is certainly one of the best philosophical defenses of the pro-life position. Be warned: if you're looking for partisan ranting or emotional appeals--i.e. abortion is wrong because liberals are evil people, or because God said so, or because babies are cute--this is not that book. Purely philosophical. Well thought out, well written. Anyone wishing to discuss this issue beyond simple slogans should read this book. Highly recommended.

Quick, Easy, Concise, Informative for Beginner/Intermediate Player

Quick easy read. I consider myself an intermediate player. I would recommend this to a beginner/intermediate player but not to a complete novice. I have read books by Negranu, Brunson, and Harrington. His strategy differs somewhat but I did learn a few things, specifically how to get just a little more value out of specific hands based on which type of player you're facing and the preflop action. I think all the hands were heads up vs one opponent once you got to the flop and most involve 3x pre flop raises. I didn't pay for this because I used kindle unlimited. I would probably not pay more than $3 for this book.

Great quick read to brush up on the type of hands that come up frequently when playing poker tournaments and the optimal ways to handle them. This one, like all of Jonathon's books are easy to read and understand for all players - even if you are extremely new to poker - but contain valuable information and insight to how one of the top tournament players around handles situations that you will find yourself in every time you play, no matter what stakes you are playing at.

About the Author
Chris has studied evangelism and church growth ever since answering phones for a Billy Graham crusade over 20 years ago, and has led countless training seminars throughout North and South America in many different denominations. He wants to help your church improve its evangelism and hospitality systems to help reach more people for Christ where your church is planted. Chris was involved in youth ministry for 15 years, was associate pastor at Christ Presbyterian in Richmond VA, and in 2001 helped to launch Eternity Church, an international church focused on gathering the nations to worship Christ. He earned a Master of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield IL, and a Master of Theology from Union Theological Seminary, Richmond VA. If You Have Greeters, They (and you) Should Read This Book

When it comes to hospitality resources, Chris and I are competitors ... but I have to say that when I read Church Greeters 101 I was more than favorably impressed. The book is a must read for your greeters. Frankly, anyone who might find themselves saying "Hi" to a guest (in other words, everyone) should read it too. Well researched, light-hearted, easy-to-read, and spot on. It gets five stars because it earned them.

Just getting started

I was recently asked to organize our almost nonexistent hospitality team at church. I was honored to be asked but honestly not sure where to start. I mean you just say hello to people right?!? Who knew there was so much more to what a greeting team actually does! Thank you so much for this book and the wonderful information and insight it has given me. I'm excited to do this ministry for our Lord!

Good to excellent content - terrible publishing policy

Lewis (Not "Flewis") wrote a decent text a number of years ago. It was then expanded to a companion volume (Analytical Sedimentology) with another author. The two nicely complement each other but the mind boggles at a price of almost $100 per each. The publisher has clearly made little effort to control the cost. Redundancy between the two volumes is excessive, hard cover rather than soft is used and, indeed, both could easily have been combined in one less pricey volume. A valuable resource to students and professionals has therefore been compromised by publisher, author or both due to ignorance, greed or stupidity. A terrible shame!
