Socrates: the precursor of client-centered therapy

Morris B. Kaplan has given us a remarkably lucid, relevant introduction to the Socratic method, and Benjamin Jowett a readable,approachable translation of the ancient dialogues of Socrates and some of his most famous partners in debate. All the dialogues demonstrate that the ones taking serious issue with Socrates were indeed the ones at the center of Socrates' responses and challenges.
At a much later time, Carl Rogers, an American practitioner of "client-centered" therapy, insisted on the same centrality of the persons seeking clarification and a way to move forward. Socrates had a profound respect for his accusers,even though in the end they turned against him. Likewise, persons "blaming" everyone else for their problems finally come to realize that it lies within themselves to solve their own problems and move forward. It is the responsibility of the counselor, or therapist, to assist in this process, not offer insights. Like Socrates, the modern-day psychotherapist claims "ignorance" -- meaning "I will not offer insight but only assist in your probing your own problems."
Actually Socrates would have challenged the great 17th century philosopher Rene Descartes, a forerunner to the 18th century Enlightenment in science and philosophy. The great Cartesian epithet, Cogito; Ergo sum (I think, therefore I am) was unwittingly countered by the Socratic dictum, Dubito; Ergo sum (I doubt; therefore I am). Socrates was the first to give credibility to doubt. He believed that there is a truth,but doubted his own ability to attain, or realize, that truth in his own existence. In trying to destroy prejudices in himself, he regarded himself as ignorant. He was -- boldly so -- aware of his own ignorance. That constituted a dramatically shrewd weapon against his enemies. That is probably why Socrates remains a model for the legal profession.
