Not For Me

He is a refugee, a Zetithian without a planet and one of the last of his kind since his world was blown out of the galaxy by a jealous, sadistic husband. He is revered as a sexual dynamo. It's both his job, and, as he and his brethren are tasked with saving his kind from extinction by reproducing in quantity, his calling. And he's gotten very, very rich from it. Women from all over the universe pay just about anything for a few hours in his bed, for a chance to bear his children. He has five hundred of them, now, but his duty is not yet finished.

That's why he's on Terran. Human women are known for being intensely attracted to his kind. He already had several appointments to further spread his seed. And then, intending nothing more salacious than a simple meal, Tarq Zulveidinoe enters the restaurant where Lucinda Force works as a waitress for her demanding father, and life will never be the same for him again.

She smells so good. It's unlike anything he's ever scented before, and he wants her madly. She may even be his mate. Her scent has him ready to pound nails and his fangs are ready to nip at her skin. But he is not worthy of her. Of that he has no doubt. And even though she wants him to sire her children, she doesn't want to keep him.

If only he had the time to try to convince her.

Lucy can't even look at Tarq without wanting him. Who could? He's gorgeous, built, and charming. His reputation as a galaxy-hopping love machine is legendary. He doesn't even charge women to sleep with him anymore, he's so rich. He just wants to reproduce, to increase the numbers of his race.

Fortunately, that works out nicely for Lucy. At almost thirty, she's desperate for children, but her father keeps her mired in indentured servitude and won't even let her date, let alone marry and have children. She's still a virgin, for pity's sake. But when the deliciously appealing Tarq asks her to call him, to be with him, she decides to grab for her future with both hands.

She'll have Tarq impregnate her, then she'll flee her imposing father, find her happiness, and start her life for real as she raises her children. And if she'll never forget the Zetithian who made her heart happy, well, it's not like he hasn't a string of lovers in the galaxy. She knows he'd never want her for life. She's too plain, too provincial, too...Lucy...to ever hold onto the man she so quickly and irrevocably fell in love with.

There are some books that just aren't good fits for me, and this one is one of them. I didn't have a problem with it being the eighth book in an existing series. It read fine as a stand-alone. Unfortunately, little else in the book appealed, despite me sort of liking the Zetithian backstory and enjoying the external plot threads in the second half of the book.

The biggest problem I had with the story was the relationship conflict between Tarq and Lucy. Not only was it something that could have been easily resolved with just a smidgen of honest communication between them, but it was belabored throughout the entire book. Mentioned so often, in fact, that it lent the narrative an overall feeling of repetition and made it hard not to toss my Kindle against the wall.

He loves her, but he thinks he's stupid because he can't read and he's bedded more women than an NBA basketball team (to the nth power). She's all things good and kind and would never want to be his mate. She loves him, but she's plain and ordinary, and could never hold the attention of someone as worldly and experienced as he. He would never want to stay with her. These insecurities are brought up again and again, ad nauseam. And despite the loving actions of both towards each other, neither finds the stones to even broach the subject with the other. This is not my idea of scintillating romantic conflict.

It wasn't until the second half of the book that some external conflict elements were introduced and the plot expanded beyond the romance. Some of those elements were quite nice, but I would have appreciated a bit more depth and detail. It served, though, to lessen the constant mentions of Tarq's and Lucy's insecurities, even if it didn't extinguish them completely. I wish it had.

There were other issues I had with the book, but those were comparatively minor when held up against the relationship problems. Still, the dialogue and the character definition were lacking in sophistication. I kept feeling like I was reading about a couple of horny teenagers with the way some of the characters thoughts and actions were represented. The sex was in no way adolescent, though. It was frequent and descriptive. It was also a bit odd for me, in part because of a Zetithian's physiological differences from a human. In part because of some of the descriptive passages.

"Thick and long, it curved toward her like a snake about to strike, the scalloped head aimed right at her, orgasmic syrup dripping like venom from the points."

Wow. Yeah. That's...well...more scary than sexy to me, no matter how nice Tarq's snard (yes, that's the Zetithian word for his ejaculate) tastes (like a hot fudge sundae, apparently). And that wasn't the only disturbing thing about his body or his talents. Practically prehensile manly bits are nice in theory, but kind of disturbing in context.

After eight books, I have to assume that Brooks has a wide following, that there are many fans of this series. I wish her nothing but the best for the continued success. After Stud, however, I can't say I'll be along for the ride. This one just wasn't my cup of tea.

Getting Better with each new book

The 8th book in the series, Cheryl Brooks continues to titillate readers' imagination with her wonderful Zithitians. Forget Captain Kirk and the Orion Slave girls. The Zithitian men rule the galaxy with their sexual prowess.

Born with a reading disability, Tarq believes the he was only good for one thing - being a stud and having as many children as he can with as many willing women. After all, the Zithitian race is almost extinct.

He would have continued on being a stud for hire until he met Lucy. Taken for granted by her family and bullied all her life, Lucy has her own self-worth issues. But a dalliance with Tarq proved to be a turning point in her life. But before these two lovers can find their happily ever after, they have to face obstacles - real and imagined.

In STUD, Cheryl Brooks returns her readers to a romantic story. Fans of Cat Star Chronicles have been brought to the far reaches of the galaxy. In VIRGIN, the 7th book, Ms Brooks even dealt with interplanetary politics.

But STUD is more personal, as we see the hero Tarq struggle with his disability. We also see how verbal abuse made Lucy very insecure. Yet against all odds, these two found to courage to leave their comfort zone so that they can live without being afraid.

Ms Brooks is still on a philosophical bent in STUD, and by doing so, she gave the Zithitian world another dimension.

This book is rated M for Mature due to sex.

these are really good very hard to put down and even when you know where the story will go it is a page turner. As long as you like sex in your reading you will like the Whole Cat Star chronicles line

Excellent Resource for Causes of the 1917 Russian Revolution

Robert Wilton was a British military liason officer and witnessed first hand the terrible tradgedy of the 1917 Russian Revolution. He was with the British consulate during the start of the 1917 revolution and the terrible aftermath. He took many notes and wrote about what he saw when he returned to Britain in 1919. He was there trying to ascertain the reasons why Russia allied with Britain and France in the struggle against the Central Powers was undermined by left wing Marxist revolutionary forces led by Lenin and Trotsky. He explains the main reasons why a great nation imploded and went from Orthodox Christian Civilization led by a Czar with a free press, trial by jury and a fairly stable rule of law to a Russian provisional government to Red and White Civil War and finally to the abysmal and savage Red Terror or government by the end of a gun and where opponents were sent in massive numbers to build Gulags and canals.

How did this tradgedy happen ? What were the causes ? Who was responsible ? Wilton spreads the responsibility around to several parties. He laments that Alexander II was a fine family man but was not suitable for ruling Russia; he could not make tough decisions when it matter the most. The Czar lost prestige and crediblity from his family ties to the notorious Russian mystic Rasputin who remarkably had the ability to stop bleeding in the Czar's only son who had inherited hemophilia from Queen Victoria's side of the family. Russia was not ready for conflict logistically. They did not have the munition cabability or the latest communication ability. They did have the bravest soldiers in Europe but logistics and armaments were not sufficient and the Germans drove them back with severe defeats such as at Tannenberg. There were shortages of food for the Russian population and after four years of war much of the population lost faith with the Czar and the Red Soviets eagerly exploited the difficulties with a vision of a worker's paradise where there would be no rich or poor but all proletariats......all brothers in sharing Russia. Desperate people do desperate things especially when evil men beckon with promises to make things better in a worker's paradise. Although the serfs had been freed decades prior probably 80 % of the population was semi-illiterate. Having many, many ill informed, illiterare and easily swayed ex-serfs was another salient cause for the Red Revolution. They could be whipped up into a frenzy to kill the upper classes and they did at the urgings of the commissars who acted as secular priests for the revolution. It was a terrible storm of murder and vengence on millions of innocents.

The Czar had kept Russia intact in the 1905 Revolution thru a combination of reform and increased security measures. But this time the Marxist's forces had outside funding from America and Germany and had improved their game plan for conquest. They had learned their lessons and improved their skills. Karensky was head of the weak and feckless Russian provisional government. He was inept and not capable of seeing the internal threats until it was too late. The Marxists were experts in persuading the poor and have-nots that all would be well in the Marxist workers paradise. Most of the former serfs believed that a classless society would be an improvement on the class structure. They allowed themselves to be enslaved for 3 generations until 1991. The Ancient Greeks were right; the rule of the mob is the worst form of government. In this case it was rule of the mob which did not believe in God or the existence of the human soul.

Of course the Germans wanted Russia out of the war and it was not hard to convince Lladimir Lenin to leave Switzerland and enter on a sealed train to Leningrad to arouse the masses during the provisional government phase after the Czar abdicated.

Germany of course supplied Lenin with funds to ensure the revolution would be successful. Also the provisional Russian government allowed many left wing radicals from New York to take part in the incipient revolution. It was a tradgedy with many fathers and causes. But there was some good news. Finland, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia did break away successfully and formed independent courtries not under Soviet control.

Excellent research book on a topic most people are not familiar with. Highest recommendation.

Taliban in Motther Russia

Believe it or not, the United States and the British Empire officially saw the Bolshevic's as a crazy bunch of Talibani's. That's why Sir Winston Churchill wrote that famous article that I won't go into here. But it was the official line until 1939. Before 1939, the Americans gave those commies a wide berth.

So Robert Wilton isn't at all controversial because even the yanks and the Brits knew that it wasn't Russians who seized power in Russia. It was an alien, 'diabolical', people who wanted revenge, as Winston Churchill wrote in his trademark Gibbonesque prose.

By some crazy alignment of the stars, the Taliban parallel hasn't been pulled out of a hat. The editors of the time-line inspired the Taliban to blow up those giants Buddha's? Why? Well this was a warning from history. The destruction of a beautiful monument to architecture was a warning that an alien culture will do this.

So when the Bolshevic's took power, they blew up the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the biggest cathedral in the world. But this wasn't because of ideology, as they say. The Nazi's didn't blow up cathedrals and neither did the French revolutionaries. It has to be an outside force, or, as they used to say, an alien tribe.

So the way a muslim can easily dynamite those giant Buddha statues, a Jew dynamited the Cathedral of Christ the saviour, and use the Icon of the Mother of God as target practice!

A fun and thorough guide!

Having finished this little gem of a book, I wanted to hop on the next plane to Phnom Penh! It was light-hearted and upbeat but thoroughly comprehensive, covering everything from history to festivals to safety tips to every imaginable social situation. The organization of information was logical and systematic, which made it easy to take it all in. The illustrations were fun too. The message I took from the book was that if you understand the people and the culture, you'll have a wonderful experience in Cambodia!

Funny, good tips, totally worth reading!

I am prepping for a two week trip through Cambodia and reading literally any and everything I can find about the culture, people, experiences etc. I really enjoyed Dos & Don'ts In Cambodia. I read it start to finish on two domestic flights recently and had check myself - laughing aloud on a crowded plane can draw some stares. There is some valuable information for sure in this book about daily stuff - traffic, choosing a place to eat, Khmer social taboos and the like. Very glad I got this and I will keep it on my Kindle to refer to during my travels.

Dr Hill's light heartedness masks a serious attempt to provide the new traveller to Cambodia a safe and enjoyable experience. His advice has obviously come from many years of personal experience and careful observation. It is very valuable and much appreciated.

Excellent and much needed analysis of social media

I have been teaching Social Media online for the MA media studies program for several years at The New School in New York City and had never found a completely satisfactory book that provided a theoretical and historical grounding for social media until I came across this one. It is a thorough, well written, scholarly yet still very accessible description and analysis of the media, communication and sociological foundations from which the current social media phenomenon has emerged. I learned a lot too from the author, and it was an enjoyable read as well.

I plan on using it as a required text for all the future classes I teach in social media.

I thought that this book had a lot of valuable information about different social media platforms and their privacy policies, however at times I thought it was not a very engaging read. It was great for detailed information in terms of breaking down each media platform and taking a look into their business models, technology, ownership, users and governance. I also thought that it was good if you are interested in the history of technology and social media. It not only gives you the background of social media and how it started, but somewhat of technology itself. She talks about the development of the World Wide Web by Tim Burners Lee, which is crucial for the start of social media. It takes a deep look into how each platform operates and how they will continue to progress forward with this push of social media. It talks about how social media is what we will all be using in the future and its important as marketers and PR people to get rid of the digital divide that we still have going on. We want everyone to be able to understand social media and how it works because that is our future. We will be doing most things online and through connectivity.

I am a journalism student and this book was a great way to finish my last semester in an interesting read, giving my brain a break from the technical and hands-on knowledge and letting myself, at times, get lost in the way our culture can forget how "social" media all began. This book gives details and in-depth overview about the history of social media that Journalism 101 classes can only touch on in a short period of time. Journalism classes today are trying to keep up with the technology and focus their classes on new media however, Jose Van Dijck's "The Culture of Connectivity: A Critical History of Social Media," takes readers back to Napster, and back to when it all began with Web 2.0, what is referred in the book as vital time for making connections on the internet.

Van Dijck makes her book relevant by showing her readers that social connectivity thrives on 5 platforms: ownership, technology, governance, business model, user/ usage, and content. In each chapter the reader learns how various media works in these platforms and why our culture is not taking notice of important changes such as privacy matters. Read this book if you want a philosophical look into what users of media today would knock-off as being a non-philosophical topic, however, they may realize it may only appear this way because it's changed a culture and isn't slowing down yet.

The Ultimate Guide to Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy!

[[VIDEOID:mo2C5LRSB1X7Y4Y]]I am a huge fan of Nolan's Batman films because they bring a sense of realism to the Batman mythology. This book is great because it allows you to take a closer look at all of the technology and gadgets within the films. The book provides plenty of photos and diagrams, along with informative text, that gives you a new appreciation for the amount of design that went into these movies.

The book covers the following topics: Batman's suit, the Tumbler and Batpod, "The Bat" flying vehicle, the Bat Cave, and Wayne Manor. There are also case files for The Joker and Dr. Crane, hospital records for Harvey Dent, many prototype designs from Wayne's applied sciences division, hand-written memos to Bruce Wayne from Alfred & Lucius Fox, Gotham Police decals, etc.

One of the unique aspects is that this book, much like the Harry Potter Film Wizardry, features inserts that can be removed from the book. Flipping through the book, it almost feels like you went to Gotham City and brought home a bunch of cool artifacts!

Overall, I can't say enough good things about this book. Batman fans will be satisfied, and it gives you a greater appreciation for the world that Nolan and his design team have created. If there is one criticism it's that the book is a bit light on "The Dark Knight Rises" material, although characters like Bane and Selina Kyle do get their own pages.

Become an Inhabitant of Gotham City..

Like so many others out there, I am extremely hyped for the final chapter of Nolan's Batman saga. To help bide my time until the film's July 20th release, I decided to check Amazon to see what was out there. The Dark Knight Manual, seemed interesting enough... and really the only book out there. I decided to take a flyer on it. Two days later, (thanks Amazon Prime!) and boy am I glad I did.

I spent a good 2-3 hours just going through this book, page by page, artifact by artifact. You can really sense that this book was a labor of love by the people who made it. Never will you come as close to being an inhabitant of Gotham City as you are while reading this book. The book may seem small at 112 pages but there is so much detail that bleeds off every single page, with lots of cool easter eggs littered throughout.

My only negatives are that I wish the book had a few more profiles of key characters in the trilogy. And that some of the individual photos used are a little dark.

All in all, a really great book for the Nolan fan. It's definitely a coffee table book that will leave your guests with a smile on their face and one that you'll find yourself coming back time and time again.

the dark knight has returned

this book's written from bruce/batman's perspective.

there is so much in this book it isnt even funny, joker's playing cards, pull out blueprints for 'the bat' and even a little booklet regarding the pneumatic grapple gun. the amount of inserts actually has the cover bowing a bit, not a bad thing in this case considering all the content, including things I'd never even noticed despite owning all 3 movies.

slight cavet though, some of the inserts are glued in in such a manner as to make looking at the pages they're attached over a tad awkward, aside from that, no real issue.

if you're looking for hidden nuggets(such as the page of gotham services stickers, yes those ARE stickers) or things you've missed that ARE in the movie, then this book is for you. if you're expecting behind the scenes comments and production notes? there are other books out there that cover that.

very much well worth the price paid.

Becky Lamb is a builder, junker, repurposer, blogger, crafter, teacher, wife, and mother of three. She likes to say she was weaned on decoupage glue and feels blessed to be raised by a mom who decorated their home on a very limited budget. Becky has been crafting and creating as long as she can remember and discovered her love for building after “retiring” in 2000 from teaching elementary school. Her husband patiently taught her to use power tools and she has continued to hone and develop her skills and style. When not building, Becky enjoys spending time outdoors with her family in her home state, Montana.

DIY pallet project must have book!

I've been following her blog and pinning her projects on Pinterest for quite sometime. Her book is great for beginners and experts alike. It has great tips to get you started, she is so creative and I admire her work so much! I've been so fortunate to find her ideas and have them inspire me within my own home, it's very difficult finding furniture in Okinawa so this book and her blog have been an amazing help in furnishing our home with the little resources we have on this island. This book is definitely worth checking out!

Crafting with Class

One of my hobbies is browsing the free section on Craigslist, and I've recently been noticing a lot of pallets up for grabs. Continuing with this train of thought, I called some local businesses (grocery stores, home depot, etc.) to see if they had pallets to give away as well. I wanted to make something with all this wood, but I wasn't sure what, so I bought this book. I was really happy that it offered suggestions on where to get pallets, and many of the suggestions lined up with my own searching, and was most excited that it included a section on pallet quality. One of the things I had trouble with on my own was collecting a lot of pallets, and having discrepancies in quality, size, and color. Thanks to this book I now know why!

Beyond this basic information I was quite happy with the things this book recommends to build with pallets. The projects range from easy (key hanger) to pretty hard (wine bar), and each instruction is easy to follow. Lamb also includes overviews of all the tools one may need while working with pallets, and includes which auxiliary parts may be necessary (metal hooks, etc.). I also love that Lamb includes ideas for what to do with pallet scraps such as a memory game. Since one of the main reasons I got this book was to reduce global waste, and get into recycling wood into art, I very much like her 'use every part approach.' Very cool book for the handyperson of any age! Could see it being a really fun time for a dynamic parent/child pair.

Becky Lamb Knows Her Stuff- Crafting with Wood Pallets is Destined to Become a Gift-Giving Favorite!

CRAFTING WITH WOOD PALLETS by BECKY LAMB is a very eye-catching book. Take a look at the cover. What do you see? You see 4 very functional wood projects crafted from hardwood pallets or crates.This book was well thought out. Even the cover is constructed of an easy to grasp non-slip plastic material that will clean up easily even if your project gets a bit messy. The pages are high gloss making them very readable and easy to see. All pictures are colorful, informative and detailed. The book is complete with a Table of Contents, an Index, a list of Resources in the back and it even has a Metric Conversion chart as well. Right off the bat, I can see that Becky is very organized; she knows her stuff!

Her Introduction gives the reader some background about her and how she became involved in the art of Pallet Creations.I really appreciate that little detail. Her Pallet 101 segment details what a pallet is, what it is made of, using the right pallet for the right project and the tools you'll need to craft your projects.

Each of the 25+ projects includes a detailed explanation of its usefulness, the tools you'll need to make it, detailed pictures and assembly instructions including the time it should take to make and its level of difficulty (beginner, intermediate or expert). Many of the projects include Pallet Pointers, useful tips to help you create a nice looking handy household item. Becky really has thought of everything to help you make some wonderful pallet creations including sites on the Net loaded with more pallet and crate projects. Once you see this book there is a very good chance that you'll want to purchase a few more copies for friends and relatives. This will quickly become one of your gift-giving favorites. I showed my copy to 2 or 3 friends and they are chomping at the bit to either borrow mine or they have hinted to me that CRAFTING WITH WOOD PALLETS would be a gift from me that they would cherish for a very long time.
