A Tale Twisting Delight!

In my mind, Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was the twist master of short stories, tiny tales in which the ending was anything but what the reader expected. Then again, fans of Dahl knew better than to have any expectation of exactly how the story would end. Well, okay, they could rightfully expect one thing: a surprise, sometimes subtle, sometimes in-your-face, sometimes humorous, in a twisted sort of way, and sometimes just plain horrifying. Dahl is gone now, RIP. But not to worry. There's a new Twist Master in town and she's very, very good. So good that I couldn't stop reading these amazing Tales of Strangeness and Harm.

I'm in awe of Ms. Carter's talent. A really well-crafted short story is more difficult to accomplish than many people might assume. Ms. Carter makes it look easy and that's one of the signs of a seasoned writer. Not only are the tales well-structured, but the characters are immediately identifiable. Somehow you'll know them - might be your nosey neighbor or that rather odd fellow you met at your best friend's wedding. What I'm trying to say is the characters in these stories are not cardboard cut-outs with nothing inside. They have their individual quirks and personalities. That, I think, is part of the success of these stories. Oh, you know what? To heck with it. I'm not going to sit here and pretend I can accurately analyze Ms. Carter's writing. If I knew how she does what she does I'd be doing it myself. Just get the darn book and sit back for some enjoyable, quirky, imaginative storytelling. It's a terrific ride. There are 8 tales in this volume and I wish there were 80. I'm definitely looking forward to Volume-Two.

Tales of the unexpected!

This collection of short stories is prime Beverley Carter in that she can create a situation of which the reader cannot predict the ending. I do love surprises! Each of these stories, some featuring rather unpleasant characters, has a twist in the tail and will leave you smiling, nodding and thinking, 'I didn't see that one coming!' It's always difficult with a collection of stories, to choose a favourite and in this group I have several. I found the story of the Millefiori paperweight quite unexpectedly creepy at the end. The story of the laboratory cat, First Filial, tells of a lab technician who doesn't feel sufficiently stretched in his job and takes on a project of his own. The final tale, A Box of Fudge, also finished with a shiver.

I very much enjoy Beverley's style of writing and these 'tales of the unexpected' didn't disappoint me. You can read a story or two here and there, or do as I did and read straight through for an evening's entertainment. Excellent!

A spiritual practice that is way beyond anything I have ever gotten involved with. Truthfulness - Compassion - Tolerance is a good thing for this humanity. The universe explained.. A MUST READ over and over again.

Since I have entered the practice, back in 2009, my back injury (which was going to require a surgery that could have rendered me paraplegic) has vanished, within a few weeks 6 - 8 weeks) doing the Falun Qigong exercises and reading this book as put me back on track with becoming a better person.
And miracles happens when you are a good person. The heart to become good can open up great doors!

You cannot imagine how valuable this book can be; nearly 100 graphs and tables packed into 124 fun to read pages!

Don Wheeler, former colleague of W. Edwards Deming, explains how VERY SIMPLE statistics can transform any business process.

As a young boy in Tennessee, I sometimes uncovered "white lightning" (moonshine whiskey) hidden in forests. MIght his East Tennessee roots give Wheeler his rare sense of humor and fascination with how data and KPI's can be used to "cheat?"

This book is very rich in actual examples of data being used to mislead as well as KPI's which actually promote THE OPPOSITE behavior intended.

Wheeler takes the reader through multiple "cycles of learning" in this short read which is easily completed in under 2 hours on a flight. But be warned; once you read this book you will want to reread it and apply the lessons many times.

Confused When Others Talk About Data?

I wish economists and journalists and other leaders would read books like Understanding Variation by Donald Wheeler. Today the news is that unemployment claims went up, for the first time in 3 weeks. Analysts are now speculating that maybe the recovery is not as strong as it appears.

Excuse me. What are you saying? Are you saying that one upward blip can be extrapolated into a trend? Are you saying that because we flipped a coin 3 times and got heads (unemployment going down), and now we got a tail (unemployment going up) that our coin is defective? Are you saying that because temperatures were warmer than usual last week that we won't have winter?

One data point does not make a trend. We can't say the recovery is soft unless we know what the normal variation is on the out-of-work claims from week to week. Any result from week to week is going to be up or down (like heads or tails). Just because it goes up doesn't mean that a trend has reversed, when we didn't have a significant trend in the first place. 3 weeks of claims going down, analogous to coin flipping, could happen 1 in 8 times. The chance of it going down a fourth time is 1 in 16, unless there's a change in the system that creates unemployment claims (or better, creates jobs). Until we get to the odds of 1 in 64 (6 weeks in a row in the same direction--or some say, 1 in 256 is less risky for identifying a false trend) we can't say that we had an unemployment trend at all.

Please, Mr/Ms Economist and Mr/Ms Journalist, don't get confused and become Chicken Little thinking the economic sky is falling based on one piece of data that was going to show up normally. Read Wheeler's book to better understand all this.

I know kung fu

After reading this book (only took a couple of evenings) I feel like Keanu Reaves in The Matrix.

I've been studying Dr. Deming's system of profound knowledge, and the bit about understanding variation has been on my TODO list. This book nailed it with a crystal clear introduction to Statistical Process Control (SPC), which Dr. Deming promoted based on his learnings from statistician Walter Shewhart when they worked together at Bell Labs. As Dr. Deming pointed out, an eighth-grader could do this; it's not supposed to be hard, so take the negative reviews of this book with a grain of salt. If you already understand and use SPC, you won't gain nearly as much from this book as a newbie like myself.

I remember reading Deming's Out of the Crisis and thinking that the terminology around SPC could easily be confused. "Control" is a very loaded term. Dr. Wheeler has come up with a new terminology, replacing "Control" with "Predictability", among other things. This is going to make it much easier for me to talk about without creating misconceptions.

Thanks Dr. Wheeler for making this topic so approachable and for framing it in such a compelling way, and for not being afraid to promote an entirely new terminology even when your book publishing company is known as "SPC Publishing". This reinforces your own personal belief in continual improvement.
