Rachelle Ayala was a software engineer until she discovered storytelling works better in fiction than real code. She has over thirty years of writing experience and has always lived in a multi-cultural environment.

An Emotional Roller Coaster Ride

Hidden Under Her Heart is a story by Rachelle Ayala that takes the reader up and down the emotional scales in the lives of Maryanne and Lucas. From their first meeting, the ride begins when Lucas plays a ridiculously immature prank on Maryanne who's on duty in her job as a nurse. Maryanne is equally immature in her vow to remain celibate until she finds the right man, but then when she and Lucas go on their first date, she teases, flirts, and makes it seem as if she'd like more. As the story moves forward, the reader learns that all she wants is to be loved.
As the book proceeds, choices are made by both of them, forcing them to grow up and face their demons.
I admit I wasn't sure I'd like this book because of its pro-life bent, but I decided to give it a chance because I'd read other books by Ms. Ayala that I enjoyed, and the premise also sounded interesting. As a pro-choice woman, I found the book an interesting study of the choices we make when life hands us rotten eggs.
The author does not shout her beliefs, which allowed me to continue the story. She merely shows through her characters that when it comes to pregnancy, adoption, abortion, and parenthood, consequences ensue so those choices must be made with extreme consideration.
Subtle religious overtones emerge throughout the book; yet again, there was no shouting. I'm a spiritualist, open to many religions even though I was raised as a Christian. The religious aspects of this book only confirmed my belief that faith in God sees us through the brightest and the darkest hours.
I give Hidden Under Her Heart five stars for its honesty. I also give Ms. Ayala five stars for her bravery in writing a story on a controversial subject in such a thoughtful and considerate way. Our discourse on divisive topics should always remain as civil as it does in this novel. I may believe differently from Ms. Ayala, but with her prose, she made me pause and think. If only we could all get back to this type of discourse in this country, we'd solve a bundle of problems facing us today. Thank you, Ms Ayala, for pointing the way.

Fantastic, thought provoking

I loved this book! I have been following Rachelle Ayala and reading everything she writes and in my opinion this is her best work yet.
First off, I really like Lucas. He has his flaws and is perhaps a bit extreme in some of his views, but deep down he is a loving, caring man who was someone I could really relate to and admire. He stands by his convictions and tries to do the right thing. My favorite part about Lucas was the growth his character took in the book. Maryanne is also a realistic character. Even though her opinions are at the different end of the spectrum from mine, I could feel her turmoil and enjoyed her journey and watching her conflicts. The cast of supporting characters was enjoyable too, complete with difficult family members and friends who sometimes caused more harm than help.
For me, this book was pretty intense and I read it in just 2 evenings because I had to find out what happened. This story touched me and also made me really think about my opinions on abortion and why I feel the way I do. Overall, the romance between Maryanne and Lucas was satisfying and the action parts were exciting and fun to read. This one is a hit, and my favorite book of Ayala's so far. Looking forward to more from this author.

It was ok

I some what enjoyed the book. I understood the central theme of the book and about how abortions are hard on both people. And the after effects. However as an avid reader, this book was too long and drawn out. I really did not need about every conversation and the story line, to me, made the characters unbelievable. He seemed to good to be true and she seemed just bent on being destructive with her relationship the young man. Although they both had flaws it was just too much.
