A year ago, our country sat riveted to newscasts showing the destruction of a national treasure - Hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans. You might ask what that has to do with a review of Kristi Gold's September release, DAMAGE CONTROL - HOTEL MARCHAND. Turns out, the answer is quiet a lot, actually.

Renee Marchand returned to the Big Easy a failure, having left Hollywood in disgrace after Pete Traynor walked out on the movie she staked her career on. Professionally shamed, Renee is also devastated on a personal level, since his disappearance followed a night of passion. She refocuses her life, determined to help save her family's hotel, a beloved landmark.

Trouble begins when Pete Traynor shows up in New Orleans, scouting a movie location. Will Renee be able to put aside her personal feelings for the good of her family? And why has Pete chosen to insinuate himself back in her life after abandoning her in the first place?

Even as the winds of Hurricane Katrina were actually blowing, Kristi was writing about the rebirth of a city dear to her heart. She wrote: ...they proceeded up the street past myriad shops, restaurants and the occasional bar, sure signs that the city had begun to completely recover from Katrina's devastation... Kristi's optimism and love for New Orleans makes me wonder if she had a crystal ball.

badgering "hero"

I've been reading and enjoying this series which, until now, I'd rate 4*.but this book isn't doing it for me. I suppose the author is trying to create a strong male lead, but I am annoyed by Pete. He doesn't respect Renee. no matter how many times she says no - and means it - he pushes and badgers. he doesn't take her no's seriously. I don't like him at all. he also ruined Renee's career 3 years earlier and then waltzes in and expects her to forgive him just like that. she's better off w/o him, imo.

Movie producer Renee Marchand returns home to New Orleans to regroup following a major fiasco. She agrees to take over public relations for the family run Hotel Marchand though she insists this is temporary as she plans to return to Southern California to reenergize her career.

Film director Pete Traynor comes to New Orleans seeking locations for a film he is planning to make. He stays at the Hotel Marchand where he sees Renee; three years ago they shared a torrid one night stand, but though both wanted more but career commitments ended their relationship before it began. Now he wants to start where they left off while she feels the same, but fears this time her heart will not recover once he leaves her, which she assumes will be as soon as he completes his mission.

The latest Hotel Marchand post Katrina romance is a fine entry in a warm series as the lead couple is a nice pairing who belong together. However, that also leads to the conflict of when he will leave her behind as he returns to California. This conflict seems forced and adding to the hero and heroine's worry is neither of the stars wants to admit the truth. Still readers will enjoy Hollywood in New Orleans as the likable Pete and the nice Renee complete what they started three years ago with lust metamorphosing into love.

a great resource book for drama and ESL teaching enthusiasts

Charlyn's book is both passionate and practical. She focuses on the why's and hows of teaching drama to ESL students from beginner to advanced, but her coverage of the subject of teaching drama, scripted or improvisational, would be useful for native English speakers as well. In one section she offers 50 drama games for ESL students. These games are explained briefly and clearly. Learning outcomes are articulated. There is a one page chart explaining the title of each game, its nature, what it practises, and what level it is good for. She looks at drama and textbook teaching, drama and pronunciation, drama and literature. In short, as a stand-alone or supplement, drama's part of the meal. The book is quick to read, and there is a whole section on how to plan and do a drama project from start to finish. Great stuff!

The Covered Deep Is A Magnificent Debut Work

If you were expecting another semi-boring, safe, syrupy Christian fiction romance of a historical nature in The Covered Deep, you are in for a big let-down. What you get instead is a well researched, tightly written, delightful piece of period fiction written from a Christian world view.

Brandy Vallance is on the cutting edge of the new wave of Christian fiction writers. She writes great stories from the heart of a good woman with Christian beliefs. There is nothing formulaic in this book. There is nothing syrupy in this book. There is a lot of good plotting, splendid dialogue, and believable characters.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a solid reading experience that is friendly to Christian audiences. I would also recommend it to anyone who likes a darned good story. You don't have to be a fan of Christian books to fall in love with Brandy's style and skill.

I am looking forward to her next book more than you can possibly imagine. She is in a class all by herself, and since she's leading the way for the next generation of writers in her genre I have nothing but great expectations.

I received an ARC of this book for review purposes. I also was a finalist in the competition and couldn't have lost to a more worthy winner.

Brandy Vallance is a debut author who shows a great deal of promise

Brandy Vallance is a debut author who shows a great deal of promise. Her spiritual themes are beautifully depicted and carry through the entire tale to create a tapestry of God's handiwork by the end.

There are some uneven parts, particularly when it comes to historical accuracy and flow of the plot overall. It would have been more appealing had Bianca's forgiveness and the realization of her own shortcomings been part of the narrative. As it is, they happen "off screen" and it creates a letdown after all of the buildup of the story. A better view of the big picture for the reader would have been helpful as well, to avoid feeling as manipulated as the characters are--maybe a gradual revealing could have worked better than a giant revelation.

I will definitely choose another book by this writer, and recommend this novel to anyone looking for a historical romance with resonant spiritual themes.

Complex historical romance

This novel is a very complex one. There are many layers of stories going on at once and at times I was little confused.

The setting is after the Civil War in a small town in Ohio. Our main character is Bianca. She is twenty-five and waiting for her true love, encouraged by her father. He's a bit of a romantic and because of him, Bianca is well read and intelligent. He sees an advertisement for a contest. The winner would travel to London and then journey to the Holy Land. She enters and is one of four winners.

The other characters are the man who originated the contest and the other travelers. Shortly after Bianca arrives in London, we find out that there is much more to the fellow travelers and the host than originally meets the eye. Throughout the journey on the boat and the time in the Holy Land, we gather information about the travelers and their relationships (hidden or overt) to the other travelers. Danger is woven into the narrative, as is romance.

I had a little trouble with Bianca. She is supposed to be so well read yet she is entirely na�ve in some areas. She seemed poised one moment yet entirely falling apart the next. She just did not seem to have a consistent personality to me.

I did not like any of the other characters. Each was someone very different from whom he or she appeared to be on the surface. For me, that was a bit much. Trying to understand all the previous entanglements of the characters made reading the book more difficult.

One strong aspect of the book is the presentation of the gospel. It is presented strongly and several times. I felt at times it was a bit much and forced. Completing the novel, one would certainly have a clear understanding of the gospel.

I look forward to the next novel from this author. She says this story was fourteen years in the making. Perhaps that is why there are so many layers and complex characters in the book. I'd like to see one written in a year or two, with a more focused plot and consistent character structure.

About the Author
Pallavi Aiyar is an award winning journalist who has worked as a foreign correspondent for over a decade, reporting from China, Europe and Indonesia. Fascinating informative account of contemporary Europe and its role in the world

I know a lot more about select favorite periods in European history than I do about the continent today, but this informative, fascinating, and engaging book went a long way toward bringing me up to date. Indian journalist and author Pallavi Aiyar attended university in England, married a man from Spain, and has lived in and written about the changing world of China, making her perspectives on European economics, politics, and daily life particularly insightful and often eye opening and counterintuitive, at least to me. For instance, worries about contaminated milk and other such concerns aside, Aiyar and her husband generally found shopping much easier in communist China, where eager store owners will reopen their shops for a late customer, than they did in capitalist Belgium, where store schedules cater to employees who don’t want to work evenings or weekends rather than to customer convenience or any business bottom line.

The New Old World combines detailed factual reportage of the people, places, and policies of Europe with Aiyar’s personal experiences of living in the capital of the European Union with her young family, which presents a fuller picture than either angle alone would do. Because of her background in China and India, Aiyar also writes fluently about Europe relative to those two rapidly emerging nations. Topics she addresses include the state of the EU, climate change politics, demographic shifts in industry, cultural legacies, immigration, Islam, the euro crisis and the regional squabbles it created, the lingering effects of colonialism, and the very strange political situation in Belgium and how that affected the party she gave in her mixed language Brussels neighborhood. Based on how much I enjoyed New Old World I purchased Aiyar’s earlier book on China, where she lived for seven plus years before Belgium. Aiyar has now moved with her husband and children to Jakarta--I can’t wait to read what she has to say about Indonesia.

Idea written before

In 2009 the author moved to Brussels, Belgium, home of the European Union headquarters.
She writes effectively about Muslim immigrants, the high unemployment and globalization affecting Europe, and an aging European population.

The premise is excellent, but a better read is George Friedman's FLASHPOINTS: The Emerging Crisis In Europe.

An easy read, but New Old World gets a bit repetitive after awhile and is tough to finish.

I was interested in this book because I hope to travel to Europe some day, however upon reading it, I see that it is just as valuable for understanding the shifting economy of the world and thus how I should think about my own finances. But what I liked about the book was its perspective, taking a new new look at things not as we wish them to be, but as they are.

For example, most people know about the orthodox Jews in the diamond business in Antwerp. Did you know that three-quarters of that business is now run by Indian Jains (most from the same region in India), and that the largest Jain temple outside of India is in Antwerp? Everyone is aware of the numbers of third-world migrants now western countries, but did you know that there are actually more westerners who have moved to third world countries, than vice versa?

Much of this book is about the clash between "capitalist China" and "socialist Europe" (the author's terms). It addresses the conflict between viewing hard work as a virtue among people from the third world, versus the various entitlements and protections from the vice of excessive work for Europeans. For example, the largest Indian diaspora outside of the UK is in Italy, where they all learn Italian in order to work, though the Walloons of Belgium would rather be on unemployment than learn Dutch in order to qualify for available jobs.

Since this book is described as being rooted in her own experiences living in Europe, I was afraid that too much of it was going to be the diary style of writing that is so common today (e.g. "I visited so and so's office, after long journey ...... surrounded by piles of paper..... was animated and his eyes twinkled as he spoke about his work in ....."). Instead, this is clear eyed economic and social reporting from an international correspondent who not only writes about what she observed in Europe (as well as India and China), but also has delved into the numbers and pulled out some surprises. For example, most people are aware of the "powerhouse" of the German economy. But did you know that the per capita GDP of just Flanders (the Dutch part of Belgium) is higher than that of Germany, UK, or France? After this book, I'm going to keep my eye out for her other writing.
