Very easy read if you are familiar with TradeStation and NinjaTrader platforms.

[[VIDEOID:b3a5656126ca01090a6e8e7783fa127c]]As a TradeStation user, I find this a helpful tool. This book is an easy read and very practical for readers who are current TradeStation users.

The language in the book could be a little overwhelming if you've never used TradeStation or NinjaTrader, but if you are current users, this book is must-have!

This book contains over 200 pages of full-color screen shots and step-by-step illustrations on building and understanding strategies in their respective trading platforms.

Well worth the money
By RiF
This over 200 page book is full of useful information for the algorithmic trader. It comes with ready to trade strategy codes for both Tradestation/Multicharts and NinjaTrader which can also be downloaded from the authors website.
Five different trade setups in different instruments are well documented and explained. From a simple just gap fill strategy to an advanced gap- and fade strategy with multiple exits and with different trend filters.
The book also covers how to set up your software for proper backtesting and how easy it is to make mistakes and get false results.
What I like most is the chapter about how to add different trend rules. This has made a big difference in my own strategy development.
The book is well worth the money and I give it 5 stars.

Great Book, this is definitely not a introductory book
By Amazon Customer
Great Book, this is definitely not a introductory book. experienced traders, either discretionary or algorithmic should read it to get new trading ideas, plus david shows not only the rules for the system but also the code and how you should set up your platform in order to trade it. BTW, the strategies are real tradable strategies,

From all the trading books that i have read so far, i can say that most of them only talk about trading philosophy and psychology, some of them talk about basic strategies and dont event show statistics, other show statistics but do not show the code. But this book has it all, and I think that every single trading book should be written as this one.

Playful political poems about the penchants and peccadilloes of the presidents!

Sure, William Taft got stuck in his tub, but did you know that John Quincy Adams used to skinny-dip in the Potomac? Herbert Hoover spoke Chinese with his wife, and Gerald Ford had his name changed from Leslie Lynch King. It’s true! In The President’s Stuck in the Bathtub, the lives of the presidents are served up as fact-filled and fanciful poems that will make you laugh, cringe, and gasp with amazement at the colorful cast of men and women who have lived in the White House. With footnotes relating the facts behind the inspiration for each poem, and a section called “Presidential Notes and Quotes” in the back, this is one hilarious history lesson that kids will elect to read over and over again!

From Booklist
Katz’s nod to presidential foibles arrives just in time for Presidents’ Day and the upcoming election cycle. In humorous yet informative rhymes, she explains that Washington never slept in the White House, John Quincy Adams often skinny-dipped in the Potomac, Herbert Hoover and his wife avoided eavesdroppers by conversing in Chinese, and William Howard Taft (at 350 pounds) required a special bathtub. Although admittedly trivial, these sorts of details are just the kind to pique young readers’ interests. The poems exhibit wide diversity (concrete, alliterative, free verse, quatrains), and each is accompanied by a footnote explaining the verse’s context and a cartoon-style illustration. Neubecker’s artwork, rendered in India ink with digital color, is full of interesting details; the title spread, for example, features an enormous, hairy Taft being extricated by four determined aides. Appended with a list of presidential notes and quotes, this is sure to be popular; pair with Kathleen Krull’s Lives of the Presidents (1998) or Judith St. George’s So You Want to Be President? (2000). Grades 2-5. --Kay Weisman

"Katz takes playful swings at U.S. presidents in poems as funny as they are informative...an unexpected and diverting look at presidents past and present."--Publishers Weekly

"In forty-three poems, Katz gives each of our U.S. presidents their due."--Horn Book, starred review

About the Author
Susan Katz discovered, while working on this book, that not all American presidents were very funny people, and she found herself doing more research for this one project than for all her other books put together. Luckily this effort was rewarded with a fresh respect for the basic humanity of all our presidents and a new tendency to smile while voting.
Susan's other Clarion book, Oh, Theodore! Guinea Pig Poems, was an Oprah pick, a Texas 2 X 2 Award winner, a selection of the New York Public Library's 100 Titles for Reading and Sharing, and the winner of the 2010 Utah Children's Poetry Book Beehive Award. She lives in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, with her husband, David, and a cat assistant, Harvey, who closely supervises her writing from the vantage point of her lap.She can be found online in the Authors section of http:\\usawrites4kids.drury.edu/.

Robert Neubecker's first book for children, Wow!City! won an ALA Notable Book award for 2005. A growing list of books have followed, including Beasty Bath, Wow!America!, Wow!School!, and Courage of the Blue Boy.He hasillustrated many books by other authors, includingMonsters on Machinesby Deb Lund andI Got Two Dogs with John Lithgow. His new book, Sophie Peterman Tells the Truth, has alreadyreceived three starred reviews.

My grandchildren love it!!
By Liamoondancer
Absolutely delightful and factual silliness! A book like this takes the "boring" out of learning about the Presidents! We no longer see Presidents as stuffy , boring old men! There were gales of laughter as I read even the first few poems to them! I must admit I also had quite a few chuckles!

Presidential, that's what you are.
By E. R. Bird
Funny what kids pick up. When I was a tot of four I had a little electronic game that came with its own book. You'd turn the pages and press the button that corresponded to the correct trivia question. In this way I learned that Mozart wrote his first piece of music when he was five (I figured I had some leeway because of this), that Marie Antoinette had her head cut off, and that President Taft got stuck in his bathtub because he was so fat. That's the kind of presidential wisdom a kid's gonna carry with them the rest of their life. It's also how I learned that teaching kids about famous people at a young age actually will stick with them into adulthood if the medium is interesting enough. Poetry would not be my first method of instilling memories, but in "The President's Stuck in the Bathtub!: Poems About the Presidents" poet Susan Katz does a darn good job locating fun facts about even the dullest leaders. They may not have been equal in stature but at least in this book each one has his say, whether it's escaping a vicious rabbit or seeing the occasional ghost.

They've been dull and scintillating. Clever and thick. Remarkably tall and surprisingly short. And what's with all the parrots as pets? With great dexterity and even greater patience Susan Katz culls, entices, and sometimes even forces interesting facts out of each and every one of our presidents. That done, she turns those traits or events into poems, being sure to include fun additional facts at the bottom of each page. The result is that kids get to meet "Elevator Operator" John F. Kennedy, the "Funny-Looking" James Buchanan, and even "Vegetating" George H.W. Bush. Accompanied by work by illustrator Robert Neubecker, the book is a ribald look at our nation's leaders. Backmatter includes dates, quotes, nicknames, and "firsts" for each man.

As it says on the bookflap, "Susan Katz discovered while working on this book that not all American presidents were very funny people, and she found herself doing more research for this one project than for all her other books put together." I'm not surprised to hear it since the sheer number of new facts here are astounding. She even seems to have made a conscious effort to avoid the obvious ones (George Washington's teeth, Lincoln's jokes, etc.). Of course, you can't help but wonder if Ms. Katz made too much work for herself when she included a note on what each president was the "first" to do, and didn't go with the obvious answers. George Washington? "First president pictured on a postage stamp." Abraham Lincoln? "First president born outside the boundaries of the thirteen original states (in Kentucky)." No mean feat.

In one of the reviews I read the reviewer complained that Katz brings up facts about the presidents that aren't particularly interesting (Millard Fillmore was boring, James Madison was short, John Adams rotund, etc.). Seems to me that isn't very fair consider how much fun their poems (and the accompanying illustrations) are in the end. Besides, I consider Millard Fillmore the letter X of the presidential world. You know how every time you get an alphabet book you flip to the letter X to figure out how the authors chose to handle that difficult letter? Well the same goes for Fillmore. Even William Henry Harrison's more interesting (as The Simpsons put it, "I died in thirty days!").

The poetry itself mostly worked. There are, however, a few times that it really rankled. I'm not a particularly creative person when it comes to scans and rhymes. I like poems to make sense to me as they ABABAB or AABBCCD. In this book you really have to go on a case-by-case basis with some of these poems. "Yankee Doodle Dandy" about William McKinley, for example, threw me for a serious loop. The rhyme scheme, such as it is, appears to be ABCCD EDFFG. When I write it out like that it makes a lot more sense. On the page, however, I was stumped by how to read it aloud, particularly when the last word of "dandy" didn't seem to rhyme with anything. Poems like these are rarities in a sea of verse that works. I just wished that they all flowed as nicely as poems like "The White House Gang" (about Teddy Roosevelt being a part of his son's rough and tumble crew) or "A Presidential Memo" about Nixon.

Robert Neubecker was an interesting fella to tap for this book. I know he's done a lot of different books over the years but my primary association with him is still "Wow! City!" and its spin-offs. Neubecker's job here is hardly easy anyway. First there's the issue of making the presidents recognizable (done well enough, though caricaturist he will never hope to be). Then there's the issue of throwing more than one race into the images. Whenever we talk about the presidents we have to wait an awfully long time before we can get to Barack. Neubecker slips in different ethnicities when he reasonably can. The fellow aghast at John Quincy Adams' skinny dipping. Folks in the angry mob of Whigs (not so sure about that one circa 1841, but all right). The trumpeter playing "Hail to the Chief" to Chester A. Arthur. You don't necessarily believe that they were there all the time (and we could debate if it's historically misleading to say that they were), but at least Neubecker's making an effort. That's something.

As for the art itself, Neubecker has a good eye for what the most interesting thing to highlight in a given poem might be. Often he has to get a little creative. Grover Cleveland was the only president to serve two nonconsecutive terms? Have him shaking hands with himself. President Eisenhower was only one of seven brothers all known as "Ike"? Show a picture of seven identical boys, all different ages, all with the same face. Sometimes the images don't make reference to the poems but to the small notes that come afterwards. For example, the image that accompanies the Rutherford B. Hayes poem "The President's on the Phone" shows Rutherford reacting to a high C described in the note as sung by one of his friends and that shattered the telephone's sounding board. Hey, man. Making this kind of stuff interesting about dudes who are seriously dull is no easy matter.

The closest approximation this book has to any other in your average everyday children's room is that classic Caldecott winner So You Want to be President? by Judith St. George. Like this book, that one identified various presidents and highlighted some quirks. Katz eschews the known stories as well as the scandals and controversies that dogged many of the men in here. In the process, she grants some of these fellows a posthumous present: something to remember them by. Not the big things, but the little ones. The details and funny matters that made them human beings. Because as far as I can tell, the best way to get a kid interested in something is to point out something weird about it. After that, it may not be smooth sailing, but at least they'll have something to remember President Taft for (besides the Judiciary Act of 1925, of course).

For ages 6-10.

Presidents are now entertaining for kids
By Weston & Melony
We are studying the US Presidents this year, and I found this book at the library. It is so cleverly written and entertainingly illustrated, that I must have a copy for our own to read over and over. There is a poem for each President; they are written in chronological order; they are all based on true stories, which are written in detail at the bottom of each poem. My sons (ages 10 and 8) giggled through the whole book!

Basic Vision: An Introduction to Visual Perception, by Robert Snowden, Peter Thompson, Tom Troscianko

How do we spot a familiar face from across a crowded room, and know that we're not waving to a complete stranger? How can we judge that an oncoming car is approaching too fast for us to cross the road safely, and immediately determine that we're better off waiting at the curb?

Basic Vision: An Introduction to Visual Perception demystifies the processes through which the brain "sees." It leads us through the various elements that come together in our perception of the world around us: size, color, motion, and three-dimensional space. The book illustrates the intricacy of the visual system, discussing its development during infancy, and reveals how the brain can get it wrong. It also demonstrates the importance of contemporary techniques and methodology--neuroscience-based techniques in particular--in advancing our understanding of the visual system.

With a sense of enthusiasm for the subject that pervades the book, Basic Vision is ideal for undergraduate courses in visual perception.

Review
...an impressive range of topics makes this textbook an ideal choice for teaching either a course on vision, or for selecting this book together with others to teach a course on cognitive processes. Psychology Teaching Review The book is very clear and easy to read. I could not help contrasting it with the work of many other authors, who seem to think that difficulty in reading their books or articles is evidence of their superior intellect. Its target audience of undergraduates will find it very easy to follow and it would not even be out of place in a public library. This is certainly a book which would enhance your university's library. If you like its approach, it would make a good set book for a vision course. Mike Griffiths, Goldsmiths College in Psychology Learning and Teaching, March 2007. I cannot but write how much I enjoy the book, which since then became my favourite while lecturing in General Psychology (perception). I really appreciate its up-to-date contents; also, no other book on psychology brought so much fun. Dr G Paramei, Interim Professor of Psychology, Darmstadt University of Technology Congratulations to you and your colleagues for having written a truly outstanding beginner's textbook on vision and visual consciousness. I am a newcomer to this scientific field but your book was the perfect introductory material for me-I consider myself very lucky indeed that I chanced across it! I do hope that your undergraduate readers will find Basic Vision as interesting, and hilariously witty, as I did. Dr L. A. Flippin, Director of Medicinal Chemistry, Fibrogen Inc, USA The quality of this book reflects the fact that, between them, the three authors boast over 80 years experience of teaching visual perception. I plan to adopt this text in my final year undergraduate teaching and I would certainly recommend others to do the same. Good science can be fun, and this book exemplifies that. Basic Vision Text
By Edward J. Rinalducci
This is an excellent text for an overview of vision research. I teach a course in Visual Performance which includes basic vision and its applications. I intend to use this book along with Boyce's book on Human Factors in Lighting. Basic Vision is good for courses which have advanced undergraduates and graduate students. It and Boyce's text also come in paperback versions.

Fabulous tutorial on modern physiology of vision

Author hits essentials of modern physiology of vision with easily understood descriptions and many illustrations and diagrams. I found it useful in teaching an overview of vision to a science club.

Basic Vision book review
By S. Eiswert
I am a senior in College and am takng a psych course and it required this book. Once reading it I truely started to enjoy it. I actually can't wait to read it and have to wait to read the whole book to stay along with the chapters. Because I am taking courses like Advanced Nutrition Biochemitry and Medical Nutrition Therapy in which the books are several thousand pages long and very confusing sometimes the Basic Vision book is a comedic relief but still helps learn the material needed for the class.

Great First Book
By Amazon Customer
Mysteries are not usually my thing as I have trouble following all the minutia and too many characters. This book does not have either of these. Of course, it was also interesting because I have been to the Sacramento Capital and general downtown area many times as well as the trip to San Jose and could easily picture her descriptions. The story was interesting, the "who-done-it" kept me guessing, and the people seemed real. I will look forward to her second effort!

Better than expected!
By Kindle Customer
A really good book. I will have to read it again to get the most out of it, as I read at night, and due to some heavy-duty meds, I fall asleep right in the middle of a chapter and don't remember half of what I read! There are so many characters I think I will make a chart to keep them straight until my mind catches up. I learned a lot about being a lobbyist. Like I would not want to be one! congrats to Bufo's sister. A talented family!

Love this book!

Loved this book....Fun read. Especially if you are a policy wonk and/or know Sacramento and the State Capitol. But even if you don't, it provides some important insights into the political process/world while being a fun read.

Sixteen-year-old Polly is on her way to the island of Cyprus, where she will work as a gofer. The trip was arranged by Maximiliana Horne, a rich, brilliant artist who, with her longtime companion, Dr. Ursula Heschel, recently became the O'Keefe family's neighbor on Benne Seed Island. Max and Polly formed an instant friendship and Max took over Polly's education, giving her the encouragement and confidence that her isolated upbringing had not. Polly adored Max, even idolized her, until Max betrayed her. In Greece, Polly finds romance, danger, and unique friendships. But can she ever forgive Max?

A compelling, but shocking novel. Not for young young-adults
By James Bow
Be warned that this review contains serious spoilers.
Madeleine L'Engle is, of course, best known for her book "A Wrinkle in Time" and the four books following which chronicle the adventures of Meg and Charles, and Meg's future husband Calvin. They are fantastical tales of travel at the speed of thought, alien worlds, monstrous evils to be fought, and the power of love in all its forms.
Madeleine L'Engle has a deeper range than young adult science fiction. Even knowing this, however, it was a shock to read "A House Like a Lotus". It has the love of the Time Quartet books, but there is no tessering. There are no alien worlds to explore, and no monstrous evils. To see Meg and Calvin coping with a brood of seven children, and their eldest daughter, Polyhymnia (Polly), dealing with a straight story about love, betrayal and forgiveness makes it feel like you're reading from a different author. It is a compelling expansion upon Meg and Calvin's characters, and Polly carries the story in the first person with considerable grace, as she first befriends, and then flees from, a dying woman named Maxa. It's brilliant, but it still takes some getting used to.
The story is written with, in my opinion, a much older audience in mind than "A Wrinkle in Time". The Time Quartet is ageless, but "A House Like a Lotus" deals frankly with sexual issues, including homosexuality and Polly's first sexual experience (heterosexual). I would not recommend this book to anybody under the age of fourteen, but to any other fan of L'Engle's work, this book is a must read.
As you can see from other reviews, Madeleine L'Engle takes it between the eyes for her controversial subject matter. Some more liberal than her might say that she has demonized homosexuality through Maxa's drunken advances on Polly. On the other hand, others more conservative than Madeleine will not appreciate the fact that sixteen-year-old Polly has sex outside of marriage once (and isn't the least bit unhappy about it) and is perfectly open to having it again with someone else. The scene where Polly loses her virginity is touchingly and tastefully handled. There is too much love going on in this scene for me to believe that a sin is being committed.
Personally, I did not think Madeleine demonized homosexuality through Maxa's portrayal in this book. Maxa is portrayed as a brilliant but hurt individual, who is dying, suffering, and deeply afraid. Much is made early on in the story that Maxa and her live-in partner Ursula might be lesbians, but Meg and Calvin make it quite clear that they believe that what goes on between two consenting adults in private is their own business. They refuse to pass judgement, and I agree with that.
On the other hand, Maxa's advances on Polly were made when Maxa was drunk, hurting more than ever, and more afraid than ever about her oncoming death. She does hurt Polly (this is the focus of the book), but she realizes almost right away that what she has done was very wrong, but only as it relates to itself. Homosexuality is not the defining factor in this shocking and key scene of the book. If Maxa had been a man, the scene would have had as much, if not more power.
"A House Like a Lotus" is a book about trust and love, and how, by just being the humans we are, we sometimes don't live up to other people's trust. And how we must forgive ourselves and the others who betray us, for our human foibles. In this regard, "A House Like a Lotus" carries more power than the entire Time Quartet combined.

Makes you think
By Lorax
The first time I read this book as a teenager, I was shocked by it. I had checked it out of the library, and I didn't like it at all, and certainly didn't think it was a young-adult fiction book. But, I am an unabashed L'Engle fan so I kept on reading. And re-reading. And while it still isn't my favorite of L'Engle's books, I think it is one of her most important. It is a book about forgiveness. It is about learning to allow people to be imperfect by your standards and loving them anyway. I didn't truly learn everything I needed to learn from this book until I was an adult - and about the third time I re-read it. And I'll probably learn more from it the next time I read it. I would not give this book to young teens as they likely aren't ready for it. But older teens (truly young adults) can benefit greatly from this book - ESPECIALLY if it shocks or upsets them ... keep reading it. You WILL learn something from it. But, adults should be aware that some parents will not like their children reading this book, so when giving a gift, be sensitive to that. This is probably the most controversial of L'Engle's books - but that's really not saying much since L'Engle is as uncontroversial as they come.

There is nothing lewd about any part of this book. The use of the term "lewd" in conjunction with any of L'Engle's books is absolutely laughable. It is neither homophobic nor immoral - one of the many points of this book is that we are more than our sexuality ... much more and that is a lesson many people could stand to take more to heart. It is a beautifully written book that tackles some very difficult issues with class and sensitivity. It is very much a book that takes the middle road and emphasizes empathy, understanding, kindness and compassion to everyone. Apparantly, that is too shocking for some people, but I personally think that only people who need to be shocked are truly shocked by this book.

An excellent book that calls it down the middle
By A Customer
Spoiler warning.
The person who wrote the review "Good old fashioned homophobia" has clearly not read "A House Like a Lotus" thoroughly. To call Maxa a "tormented alcoholic lesbian" and a "straw figure" is to severely underrate her character. She is, throughout the book, an excellent mentor to Meg and Calvin's oldest daughter, Polly. She is, however, suffering from a terminal and painful disease, which has nothing to do with her homosexuality. It is the fear and pain from her illness that causes her to momentarily forget herself and make a drunken advance on Polly in the key scene of this book.
As somebody else noted, the homosexuality of the character is incidental to this event. Had Maxa been a man, the scene would have had as much, if not more power. As such, it is interesting to note that Madeleine, for good measure, has Polly suffer through a leud *heterosexual* proposition soon after this event, producing, essentially a sexless two-part rape of poor Polly, which is the key to her pain in this story. When Polly reaches out to the sympathetic Rennie after all of this, it is tellingly the actions of the man that is topmost on her mind and not Maxa's advances.
And I figure that Calvin's anger when his son Xan and his niece Kate bring home some very hateful homophobic talk should leave no doubt as to the tolerance of Calvin and Meg's position on homosexuality. Maxa could hardly be accused of being in the closet, and yet Calvin and Meg are quite willing to trust Maxa with their daughter.
And as for Meg forsaking her docterate for her husband, again that's an example of poor reading. She did it for her children's sake, not for her husband, and she does help her father's scientific activities, especially when mathematics is involved. I may not agree with her decision to postpone her docterate while she had her children, but the ultimate decision lies with her and who are we to tell her otherwise?
As you can see from some of these reviews, it appears that Madeleine has ticked off both liberals and conservatives with her book. She's falsely accused of homophobia, and she is criticized for a "dirty" heterosexual sex scene which is, in my opinion, tastefully and tactfully handled. Clearly, to tick off both sides suggest that Madeleine has done something right.

Anthropology and Anthropologists: The Modern British School, by Adam Kuper

On its first publication in 1973 Adam Kuper's entertaining history of half a century of British social anthropology provoked strong reactions. But his often irreverent account soon established itself as one of the introductions to anthropology.
Since the second revised edition was published in 1983, important developments have occurred within British and European anthropology.
This third, enlarged and updated edition responds to these fresh currents. Adam Kuper takes the story up to the present day, and a new final chapter traces the emergence of a modern European social anthropology in contrast with developments in American cultural anthropology over the last two decades.
Anthropology and Anthropologists provides a critical historical account of modern British social anthropology: it describes the careers of the major theorists, their ideas and their contributions in the context of the intellectual and institutional environments in which they worked.

Review
Its great merit is that it not only describes satisfactorily all major developments in method, theory and controversy, it also gives much biographical and sometimes gossipy information about the persons responsible for those developments.

A Thinking Person's Guide to 50 Years of British Anthropology
By Bob Newman
I first began to study anthropology 53 years ago, arriving at university never having heard of the subject. I wound up as an anthropologist, but also something of an area specialist (South Asia). I never had pretensions to be a theorist, nor have I ever aspired to expertise in kinship studies. My training was under American anthropologists to be sure, but they encouraged us to read and think about British and French scholarship as well. I never, however, felt that any one of these three schools had all the answers. One needed to develop an understanding by reading, doing field work, and thinking for yourself. British anthropology, from 1922 to 1972, as covered in Kuper's book, took a harder line. You focussed on the issues laid down by the leading lights, you went to study in "the colonies", mainly Africa, and wrote within the doctrine---or you got nowhere. It was another age. The chief figures that dominated the field in Britain---Malinowski, Radcliffe-Brown, Evans-Pritchard, Fortes, Gluckmann, and Leach---published any number of brilliant theoretical works, but allowed little deviation from the established topics. Functionalism (human behavior is guided by utilitarian or `functional' reasons) gave way to structuralism (analysis of socio-political structure--especially kinship--can explain human behavior/culture), then the field began to splinter a bit. The linguistic and psychological concerns of the Americans and more so the sociological and mythological analyses of the French (Durkheim, Mauss, Levi-Strauss) finally did influence the British anthropologists. The full story of the twists and turns of British anthropological theory await you in ANTHROPOLOGISTS AND ANTHROPOLOGY along with a good amount of personal detail about the main protagonists.

Kuper's book is not an easy read. It is academic, but clear. If you have no prior acquaintance with anthropology, this is definitely not the place to begin. However, if you are teaching Anthropology or if you wish a brilliant summary of the field's history in the UK, or if you just want to review your understanding of developments as I did, this book is well-worth reading.
