About the Author
A history professor by trade, Matt Joseph's automotive passion was inherited from his father early on. Matt has been published in more than 1,800 feature articles, and was a contributing editor for magazines such as Skinned Knuckles and Cars & Parts. He has hosted two automotive themed radio talk programs, and presently works in TV. He continues to work as an industry consultant, providing services to corporate, financial, and government clients on various aspects of automotive design, marketing, advertising, publications, and policy.

Another Great Book From An Automotive Legend!!

I picked this up right when it came out and dove into the pages and the project (an 84' AR Spider). As per usual for Mr. Joseph, the writing is interesting and detail oriented without being needlessly complex. The photography is outstanding and final result is a book that explains the processes and the reason they are used well enough so that a novice (me) can get started and an expert (my friend) can learn a trick or two. If you are starting a project (or just thinking about it) pick up a copy immediately.

Excellent Introduction and Overview

I imagine this text becoming a classic on the subject. The author wrote plainly. He introduced bumping, filing, filling, grinding, patching, sanding, sectioning, welding, and more. Newer and older repair approaches are mentioned, if only in passing. The author also discussed advantages and drawbacks of an impressive variety of tools normally used in bodywork.

After reading this book, I feel confident enough to tackle rust remediation on my aging Chevy truck. I think this book communicated the principles well enough that I'll be able to get out of any trouble I might stumble into. And I'll surely avoid a lot of trouble altogether. Without this book, I shudder to think of the damage I would have caused had I gone straight to an auto parts store and tried to git-r-done.

The author seems to possess a patience and reverence for the work, and what it takes to do bodywork competently. This is not a 12-step plan for slathering filler and spray paint on your ride.

With regard to criticism, I can think of three things that prospective readers might care to know. First, this book does not specifically discuss the latest generation of fancy electric sanders that are now probably finding their way into automotive use. For example, I happen to own a Festool RO 150 FEQ Rotex sander, which I reckon to be suitable for some automotive applications, but this book only addresses pure-rotary sanders of a traditional design. Second, this book does not discuss the application of paints and finishes much, if at all. Presumably, painting is beyond the scope of this book, and deserves treatment all its own. Thirdly, despite talking about welding as it applies to auto bodywork, persons who have never used a welder will need separate instruction.

Incidentally, bumping means using a hammer or similar tool to gently change the shape of sheet metal. I recall being confused about what bumping meant as I read the first pages of the book.

About the Author
Jean Rhys was born in Dominica in 1894. Coming to England aged 16, she drifted into various jobs before starting to write in Paris in the late ''20s. After Leaving Mr. Mackenzie was written in 1930. Her early novels, often portraying women as underdogs out to exploit their sexualities, were ahead of their time and only modestly successful. From 1939 onwards she lived reclusively, and was largely forgotten when she made a sensational comeback with Wide Sargasso Sea in 1966. She died in 1979.

Better than Fodor's

Rough Guide's book on Moscow is by far one of the best tour books I have seen for that city. Recently we had the chance to live in Moscow for two months. This book, along with the Rough Guides Russian phrase book, were our constant companions. The Moscow book was essential for giving us really indepth information about most of the sites we went to see. Also, the history section was invaluable to us as we found it necessary to do a little homeschooling of our children while there. I still refer to the history section of the Moscow book to refresh my memory on the complicated story of Russian history.
We also had Fodor's along with us but found that we relied much more on Rough Guides as a source of important and reliable information. Rough Guides is a must if you visit Moscow.

I'm only giving it 2 stars because the history and the neighborhood descriptions are very detailed. Otherwise, it's a terrible guide. It claims to be updated as of 2009 but:
1. the price for a visa in the US is listed as $100. It's been $130 for a little over a year
2. it says -like most guides- that you can't get rubles in the US. Tell that to Bank of America, who just sold me 3000 of them.
3. talks about buses from Sherm. airport to the city but makes no mention of the train from Sherm. airport into to the city which has been operational for a year +
4. just glances on the fact trains go to Vladimir (where I'm headed)and talks mainly about the buses. Trains leave both Kursk and Yaraslov stations, express, commuter/local trains all day but you wouldn't know it from this guide
I could go on.
Also, it plugs certain websites, tour guides and even a laundromat, rather than giving a range of options.
The maps are few and not terribly helpful, esp. as all the (non major) streets are not labeled (this is where Lonely Planet is good)
Very few (budget)hotel and restaurant reviews. While it provides about a dozen accommodation websites, don't use this book to find a hotel/hostel/B&B (again LP is the better guide book here)
While it lists the train destinations from the various stations (as if you couldn't figure it out from the name of the station) it doesn't list stops along the way so you'll have to do some on-line research to find out which station you need to go to if you plan on taking a train out of the city.

Luckily I'm only in Moscow for a few days. I would have been super irritated if I planned on staying in Moscow longer and had bought this book. Unfortunately, it's the most "updated" of the guides, which is why I bought it. All in all, this guide is useless. If only Lonely Planet would update its 2007 edition.

THE essential guidebook for anyone heading to Moscow

When I packed my bags for Moscow last summer I included about 4 different guide books, and the only one that came home ragged was this one. Absolutely the best I have seen or ever expect to see -- Step by step suggestions to get you exactly where you need to go, maps and more maps, and a small language primer. The thing that puts this book above the rest is that it gives you a complete historical story behind each destination. I came away with beautiful pictures and the history to go with them. This book even features short day trips outside of Moscow. The Rough Guide pocket sized language primer (available from Amazon) is also an essential. Take these two books and prepare yourself for some of the greatest times you will ever have. P.S. -- Check out the new edition

Can it be true?

The author presents his theory based on historical events, written and oral material, and on philological study of both Japanese and Hebrew, and finds compatibility between the two groups: the emerging Japanese people on Japan's territory in the 6th century and the ten "lost" tribes (or part of them) moving East. The comparison is indeed attractive and sometimes evidential. The affinity of Shintoism with early Judaism is quite astounding, and the explanation of mysterious words and phrases in the Japanese language by the Hebrew or the Aramaic makes one wonder if this theory of Japanese=Israelites is afterall true. A worth-while and grasping reading.

To much evidence to doubt.

While taking the 64-day Holland America cruise around the Rim of Fire, we spent time in for Japanese cities. I visited six Shinto temples and found stunning similarities with Jewish temples, including names of things there, the washing of hands before entering, which is the same as washing hands leaving a Jewish cemetery. In two temples I noticed a rope over the entrance. This rope is mentioned in the Old Testament, plays a function there, but has no function at the entrance to the Shinto temple; it is purely a remnant of a tradition. The robes of temple servants have four "thistses" worn on their body garments by religious Jews. A temple preacher wears in his forehead a black box; Jews use a black box on the forehead for prayers.
Out of the 500 words delineated in Joseph Eidelberg's book as having similar to Hebrew pronunciations and the same meaning, I picked 80, for which the pronunciation and the meaning it exactly the same. I verified that with a 19-year old Japanese girl from our ship; she spoke a little English. She verified 60 of these words. Then her mother came (looking for her). She verified more words.

We have to take into account that the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel were Israelis, but not Jews. Apparently, their Hebrew was somewhat different from the southern two tribes of Yehuda (Jews) and Benyamina. From the expulsion from Israel to the entering to Japan passed nearly thousand years, i.e. many generations in Babylon, Kavkaz, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Korea.

I have no doubt that the Japanese stem from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel.

Israel and Japan- a filial relationship?

Eidelberg presents his audacious premise: namely that the lost tribes of Israel migrated eastward to found the island nation of Japan. Don't write it off- while some of Eidelberg's theories may appear farfetched, others appear strangely plausible, even probable. Witness the parallels between the ancient heroes of Japanese mythology and the Hebrew patriarchs, the uncanny similarities between the rites of Shinto and ancient Judaism, similarities in custom and language. Eidelberg even suggests a systematic methodology by which certain Hebrew words were altered when transliterated into contemporary Japanese. Whether you agree or not, Eidelberg's book appears destined to stir debate for years to come.

Counterpoint

I enjoyed reading Michael Schaller's "Ronald Reagan"since it helps show how public perception can sometimes be different from reality. While I do not agree with all of Schaller's points, I think he highlights many of the Gipper's flaws and shows how the man could simply overlook obstacles. The GOP certainly was looking for a hero after the Nixon/Agnew fiasco so the tendency by many to embellish Reagan's accomplishments is often overdone. Reagan benefited from a dramatic wave of technology (PCs/microchips/software), lower interest rates (thank you Volker), and a break in oil prices. He did facilitate many positive changes (National Science Foundation funding) and didn't wage a major war to show he was tough. The book made me think of both the good and bad things that happened during Reagan's tenure and perhaps realize that this president did not change government very much. It's a good offset to some of the blindly adulatory books on the man (and I was/am a Reagan supporter).

Great biography of President Regan -- not too long and yet covers all the pertinent facts of his life in an unbiased way. I bought this to read to my elderly friend who an no longer read herself and she thoroughly enjoyed it.
