Fun read

Yes, it's an old fashioned book, but I loved it! Written in the 1930s I believe, at a far more innocent time (pre war) we learn all about Mr Finchley and how this trip changes him forever. I love Mr Finchley! He's honorable, honest and ever such a British gentleman. The best thing, for me, was knowing that the whole thing was going to turn out just fine, despite some of the despicable characters he met! No blood and gore, no over the top nasty stuff! Just fun adventures with some very interesting people of old. A lovely Sunday afternoon read.

As does a large, rampaging robot with its ability for human consciousness locked on revenge. Thrown into the mix are 17-year-old Lee Brackett and his mother, Clara. Who have come to New York for the world's first Science Fiction Convention. Mystery and action drive the narrative, while multiple character perspectives impart backstory fragments that keep the reader wanting more. Comic books play a pivotal role in the text, making the inked illustrations and minicomic at the book's end a nice touch. Brad Bird is the Academy Award winning writer and director known for hit films such as The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and The Iron Giant.

Damon Lindelof is the co-creator, executive producer, and head writer for the critically-acclaimed ABC show, Lost. He is also the writer of the 2006 comic book miniseries Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk.

Jeff Jensen is a senior writer for Entertainment Weekly. Don't buy the Kindle version

Don't buy the Kindle version of this book. Stick to the hardcover print edition. The Kindle edition is missing the comic book at the end that is a critical part of the story - and is found at the end of the print edition. Disappointing it's not in the Kindle edition.

The year is 1939, and the New York World's Fair is just about to open. A secret society called Plus Ultra is about to reveal their biggest secrets to the world, but there's a cyborg out to get vengeance, and Nazis at every turn trying to get their hands on him - and a recruited mother and son are caught in the crossfire.

This is a bonafide prequel to the movie that comes out in May 2015. Something to flesh out the world of 'Tomorrowland', which has already been explored in Alternate Reality Games, the 1952 mystery box, and other media.

There's a seriously fun story that has a ton of nods to history and science fiction. References to the First World Science Convention (WorldCon), early Disney history, and twists on well-known Tesla and Earhart history. The story twists and turns with actual history on that fateful weekend, and the attention to detail is superb.

The artwork, by Jonathan Case, is fun and perfect. There's a full-color comic inside the book with the print copy (not the Kindle copy), that is the same comic one of the main characters gets in the story, and it has a puzzle in the back you can solve too. The book cover itself, in a reflective gold is gorgeous, and will capture any eyes on your bookshelf.

This is a sci-fi adventure that is fun, action packed, an easy read, and recommended for teens through adults.

Fast-paced Prequel to Upcoming Tomorrowland Movie

BEFORE TOMORROWLAND is a prequel to the upcoming Disney film, Tomorrowland.

Written by Jeff Jensen, Jonathan Case, Brad Bird, and Damon Lindelof, this fast-paced science fiction novel introduces readers to a secret society led by scientific geniuses. Set in 1939, the group is about to reveal an amazing new world. However an evil scientist and a confused robot-human hybrid have other plans. Caught in the middle are a mother and son in New York for a science fiction convention.

Although younger readers may be confused by the wide spectrum of characters and historical references, science fiction fans will easily become immersed in the fantasy. The retro-superhero comic illustrations add to the appeal. The book also includes the 20 page comic featured in the story adding an additional dimension to the experience.

With the popularity of Disney films, this book is likely to be popular. Consider a summer library program based on the Tomorrowland theme. There are lots of social media resources ready to use. About the Author
Enrica Garzilli is a scholar of classical and modern Asia. Harvard Alumna, since 1995 she is the Editor-in-Chief of the academic journals International Journal of Tantric Studies and Journal of South Asia Women Studies. After her first degree in Sanskrit and Indology at the Oriental School in Rome with the most famous disciples of Giuseppe Tucci, in 1988 she won a Fellowship from the Indian governemnt and was a Research Affiliate at the P.G.D.A.V. College, one of the oldest institutions of the University of Delhi, working under the supervision of pandit Prof. Nityanand Sharma, and residing in India for over two years.
In 1992-2011 she won the Senior Fellowship of the Harvard Center for the Study of World Religions and taught as a Lecturer of Sanskrit at the Dept. of Sanskrit and Indian Studies of Harvard University, served as Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Oriental Series - Opera Minora and Managing Editor of the HOS. In 1994-96 she was a Visiting Researcher at the Harvard Law School, then a professor at the Italian universities of Perugia, Macerata and Turin.
She has published the books "Journal of South Asia Women Studies: 1995-1997 (Milano, 1997), Translating, Translations, Translators: From India to the West" (Harvard Oriental Series - OM, Cambridge 1996), "The Bhāvopahāra of Cakrapāṇinātha. A Sanskrit Hymn to Śiva (11th-12th century A.D.)" (Napoli, 1992), "Lo Spandasaṃdoha di Kṣemarāja. Traduzione dall' originale sanscrito del XII sec. d.C." (Napoli, 1989) and some 88 scholarly papers and reviews on the main international academic journals and encyclopaedias.

Difficult textbooks

I am just finishing up a college course using Jeffrey Slater's College Accounting, A Practical Approach 1-12, 10th edition.
I am going to literally BURN this extremely difficult to understand yet expensive textbook when I'm done with it! Slater is very confusing in his teaching. I would NOT recommend learning Small Business Accounting using his books. He includes things that doesn't make any sense. The Classroom Demo problems are extremely difficult to follow. He may have years of teaching experience but he doesn't have a clue how to teach in a textbook!
I am a 4.0 GPA student who will be breaking this GPA now because of this stupid textbook.

As a recent enlistee, Mackin (1898-1974) joined the 5th Marines in June, 1918, during the battle of Belleau Wood. He served with the regiment until the Armistice as a rifleman and then as a runner--a job with a life expectancy usually measured in hours. Mackin's memoir, supplemented by interviews taped in the 1970s, covers six months of action. In direct and simple prose, his taut, immediate account details a time when, with air support and field radios far in the future, machine guns and barbed wire still dominated the battlefield. In overcoming these obstacles virtually unaided, the courage and initiative of such front-line soldiers as Mackin and his comrades were tested to their limits and never found wanting. This immediate, eloquent report, meriting comparison with Thomas Boyd's Marine Corps classic Through the Wheat (1923), belongs in all collections on U.S. participation in WW I.

A real curiosity: a highly mannered WW I diary, published nearly 80 years after being written and 20 years after its author's death. Mackin (1898-1974) entered WW I in June 1918 as a 19-year-old Marine infantryman. He was immediately thrust into the front lines. The ``Boche'' crouched a thousand feet away, on Hill 142 in the Belleau Wood of France; it was the job of Mackin and other raw boys ``full of restlessness and spice'' to win the hill and then the war. They did--although not, as this stylish diary makes clear, without exposing themselves to unspeakable horrors. Mackin, who refers to himself in the third-person as ``Slim,'' plunged into the action by volunteering for the ``suicide squad'' as a ``runner,'' a man who steered soldiers into the front lines. Within days of arrival, he'd killed his first German, recounted in a passage that reveals the art, sometimes strained, that marks the diary: ``He reached for the tool of his trade. It came up, fitting in snug comfort like the arm of a pal. Its smooth stock caressed him from shoulder to cheekbone. Habit? Training! Target--the half-drawn breath--a finger pressure--recoil.'' Sometimes a young man's lyricism takes over: ``We lay close-hugged to the earth, breathing the reek of mother soil and the mystery of night.'' Bright snapshots abound, like the one of Skipper: When shot in the neck muscles, he unbuttons his collar, cleans the wound with his finger, buttons up again, and returns to work. The horror of war never departs: rain of bullets, threat of mustard gas, corpses sprawled in trees. Mackin didn't fulfill his literary potential; after the war, he worked as a laborer, bus driver, appliance-store owner, and custodian. Excellent Read

The writing style threw me at first. The book is written in short one to four or five page "thoughts" or remembrances. And written in third person. But once I got into the flow of the writing style I didn't want to put it down. The short stories follow this Marines day to day fighting from Belleau Wood to the last day of the war. The book starts in the trenches and ends in the trenches. This hero tells it like it was.....

Vietnam was nothing new

Mackin's book is a spare, at times profound and almost poetic evocation of the life of a Marine Corps grunt on the Western Front in World War I. The dominant theme is of how men accommodate themselves to the appalling realization that they are in a hopeless situation in which they will be killed, and there is nothing they can do to prevent it, and that no one other than their comrades will ever fully appreciate this predicament: "The folks at home will never know the truth."
Mackin writes of the thrill and terror of battle, the feelings of fear and elation, and the awe at seeing other men die: "It is always a show, no matter how terrifying."
To deal with this world of fear and death, men developed a sarcasm for weakness: "They make a bitter joke of things to cover feelings"; "We learned to close our minds to the memory of men who fell. We took the way of living day to day . . . We learned to laugh at everything in time. It carried us." Men lost their youth, and in some ways matured, and in other ways were permanently scarred: "There was no singing now . . . The faces had changed. . . . his scars would be deep, and never, never leave his eyes."

STEVE�COLL is most recently the author of the New York Times bestseller Private Empire. He is the president of the New America Foundation, a nonpartisan public policy institute headquartered in Washington, D.C., and a staff writer for the New Yorker. Previously he worked for twenty years at the Washington Post, where he received a Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism in 1990. He is the author of six other books, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller Ghost Wars.

More Timely Than Ever

As the boss of ExxonMobil gets ready to take over the State Department, this riveting history is more than timely. Big oil,companies always have had their own foreign policies. How will Tillerson's corporate foreign policy morph into Trump's foreign policy? Steve Coll's book gives us the best road map possible.

Must read for anyone interested in the fascinating world of oil

Private Empire provides a very interesting view behind the scene of the world's biggest oil company across the decades. It shows the good, the bad and the ugly of the firm and it's leaders against the backdrop of historical events in the (oil) world. Exxon provided and provides great wealth for shareholders, employees and host countries, but also was and partly is silent where host countries commit atrocities, don't respect human rights or misuse the wealth Exxon helps them to extract from oil. The understandable reasoning is that this is not the job of a company. Still, this leads to some bitter outcomes. The book provides for fascinating reading. The only thing missing is a deeper understanding of the motivations of the key players, the CEO's of Exxon. They come off as rather one-dimensional, which may well be true and certainly results from describing the actions of the players through the eyes of an independent observer, but some colour provided by the CEO's would have made the book even more interesting. Still, this is a great book.

When you are *really* big, who matters to you?

The book is principally about the international doings of ExxonMobil (EM) during the leadership of the current and past CEOs, Lee R. Raymond (CEO of EM from 1998 to 2005) and Rex W. Tillerson (CEO of EM since Dr. Raymond retired at the end of 2005).

The story starts with the Exxon Valdez grounding in Alaska in March 1989 and ends with the Deepwater Horizon blowout in the Gulf of Mexico in April 2010. Starting with the Exxon Valdez is the author's way of introducing employee Lee Raymond. At that time, as President of Exxon (before the merger with Mobil in 1999), Mr Raymond was the lead for addressing the Exxon Valdez problem.

The book ends by discussing the Deepwater Horizon accident because the book has to end and that's a dramatic event, even though EM was no part of the accident.

The book is relentless in reporting how this international company works anywhere it can reasonably make a profit. Another bold point is how EM avoids engagement with the US government whenever it can avoid it, but also courts US diplomatic intervention when EM needs a way smoothed with a foreign power.

Along the way, we are taught that, to be a viable business, to keep the stock value up, an oil/gas company has to constantly look for new places to get oil/gas. This can be done by exploration and drilling, and it can be done by buying a company. We learn to sympathize with the company's quest for oil/gas because there are thousands of employees and retirees who count on EM's success.

This is a good read, a view into the highest level of what a very large company does to survive and flourish.

My take-away thought: Perhaps the most famous quote in the book is from Dr. Raymond: “I’m not a U.S. company, and I don’t make decisions based on what’s good for the U.S." I have always thought of EM as an American company, but Dr. Raymond set me straight. Now I wonder how "American" our other largest companies are (examples: Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson).
