Great recipes, if you have plenty of time for cooking!

An excellent book, lots of traditional & "classics" recipes, written with much detail & care, but for serious cooks that can spend a few hours in the kitchen.

The only problem (or advantage, depends how you look at it) is that this is aimed for profesionnal cooks that have plenty of time, ingredients, and utensils in their hands. If you want to study & learn the basics of french cuisine and are ready to invest what it takes, then this is an excellent reference. But be warned that many recipes is written over 1-3 pages (very detailed step-by-step description with the politically correct - french - terms for each procedure). So a solid and generously illustrated reference if you want to learn how real restaurants cook do their trade!

If you're an amateur and would like to cook "real & serious food" at home, but don't have hours to carefully carve every piece of vegetable and create many stocks, sauces & such, then pick another book. The recipes in this one look delicious, and the book itself is great (lots of photographies, very interesting and relevant text), but I never cooked anything from this book yet (so can't comment on how these taste) simply because it seems that each recipe will take me 3 hours... and I always end up chosing something in another book that looks doable for a weekly dinner.

Maybe I'll do a coq au vin for my dad's birthday when I have a long weekend ahead? Maybe... Or when I'll retire?

Systematic and artful approach to French cuisine

The book,Cuisine Foundations Classic Recipes, is very intuitive with systematic approach to French cuisine. Very convenient with tables and measurement both in US and Metric system. This book is filled with colorful and artistic pictures of each recipe. A great reference book, well worth the money.

About the Author

Christopher Hallinan is a technical marketing engineer for the Embedded Systems Division of Mentor Graphics, living and working in Florida. He has spent more than 25 years in the networking and communications industry, mostly in various product development, management, and marketing roles, where he developed a strong background in the space where hardware meets software. Prior to joining Mentor Graphics, he spent nearly seven years as a field applications engineer for Monta Vista Software. Before that, Hallinan spent four years as an independent Linux consultant, providing custom Linux board ports, device drivers, and bootloaders. His introduction to the open source community was through contributions to the popular U-Boot bootloader. When not messing about with Linux, he is often found singing and playing a Taylor or Martin.

Practical advice from an experienced practitioner

Hallinan's book presents a balanced tour of the basic knowledge

required for an embedded Linux design effort. The subject is

exceedingly large and the author wisely chooses to focus on essentials

such as tools, debugging, and architecture. There is less emphasis on

quickly dated material such as source code tours and build

instructions as is found in other texts. This book will add to your

knowledge... not just your script library.

Two attributes of this text are notable: a) This is the only text on

the market with an overview of the latest CONFIG_RT technology found

in the Linux kernel. CONFIG_RT is a new way of reaching real time

performance requirements that does not depend on sub-kernels or

interrupt abstraction. b) The author remains true to making this a

"primer". This is an ideal book to start with and lay the foundation

for future learning

Excellent survey

I am an experienced embedded developer that just inherited an embedded Linux-based project already in progress. As there happens to be no one else at my company with any embedded Linux experience, I automatically became the de-facto Linux expert and I needed to come up to speed on a lot of topics very quickly. I found this book to be an excellent survey of the must-know topics for the embedded Linux developer. It also contains many references to the most definitive sources of information on the various topics. Highly recommended for coming up to speed on embedded Linux.

Just plain excellent

In my work, I not infrequently have to familiarize myself with different technologies. I generally don't have a lot of time to do this.

Books like "Embedded Linux Primer" are my salvation. The author states in his preface "This book describes my view of what an embedded engineer needs to know to get up to speed fast in an embedded Linux environment". I am not an engineer, but I am a technologist and this book got me off to a flying start in terms of letting me quickly expand my knowledge of embedded Linux.

This book will not teach you how to use Linux or how to program in C and you'd best have some experience in both to even read the book.

It is not a hardware book either or a book on the Linux kernel.

It is what its title states, a primer on embedded Linux systems and how to get them up and running.

In 19 chapters, author Hallinan walks the reader through initial discussions of why to choose embedded Linux and quickly moves into the anatomy of an embedded Linux system. Hallinan's writing style is wonderfully clear and he rarely deviates from the subject at hand. There are lots of tips in the text covering the idiosyncrasies of working with an embedded system, which I found particularly helpful.

Each of the chapters is a lesson. At the end of each, there are suggestions for additional reading.

In my case, I just needed a coherent overview of embedded Linux. I got that quickly and easily thanks to Hallinan's style. Now that my initial purpose has been accomplished, I can do as Hallinan suggests: take out an old x86 system and follow along as he explains how to get an embedded Linux system up and running. Hallinan makes it a fun task.
