Considering these works, it seems fair to say that the publisher's "Encountering Biblical Studies" series will make a useful contribution to a reader's biblical knowledge. The series, designed for undergraduate college courses in religion but useful for educated lay readers as well, is written from a very conservative or evangelical perspective and provides good examples of that approach. Aside from expository volumes like Hagner's, which address individual books of the Bible, the series consists of two surveys treating the Old and New Testaments plus two collateral volumes of readings aimed at placing the Testaments in historical context. With Readings from the Ancient Near East: Primary Sources for Old Testament Study, Arnold and Beyer (coauthors, Encountering the Old Testament) provide a selection of 91 documents from other cultures surrounding Israel and thus inform the reader of the wider cultural, religious, and social context in which the Old Testament documents were composed. Each selection is preceded by brief comments that make clear the background and content of the text. They are arranged in the same order as the books of the Old Testament and are collected under headings such as "Creation and the Flood" and "Law Codes." An excellent selection by the editors helps the reader compare and contrast biblical material with other readings from the same region. The book by Hagner (George Eldon Ladd Professor of New Testament, Fuller Theological Seminary) is not a verse-by-verse exposition but a chapter-by-chapter summary of the major themes of the New Testament Book of Hebrews. Hagner also includes commentary on how this applies to the Christian life. Each chapter is preceded by an outline, a list of supplemental reading from other biblical books, and suggested objectives for student learning. At the end of each chapter is a list of study questions, key terms, and a bibliography for further reading. A select bibliography, glossary, Scripture index, and subject index add to the usefulness of the volume. Both books are recommended for libraries looking to supplement their collection of evangelical books related to the study of the Bible.

Good Intro / Overview of Hebrews

Hagner does a decent job of digging deeper into the book of Hebrews. This book is a great way to step into the vast array of literature on the book of Hebrews that is out there. The major issues in Hebrew's are covered from a fairly conservative angle. Hagner does not hide what he believes, but does point out what many sides to the different issues in Hebrews are.

The side conversation windows are helpful in going farther on certain points such as perfection and others. This book is going to get you a lot farther in your study of Hebrews than a bible dictionary or some crackpot online commentary. Well worth your time, if you are interested. JVD

Excellent intro into the study of Hebrews.

Donald Hagner's work here is an excellent introduction to studying one of the most complex books of Scripture. With a gift for being able to communicate and a willingness to let Scripture say what it says without contorting its plain meaning to make it fit some theological form, Hagner succeeds at opening the book of Hebrews marvelously.

Like the other books in the Encountering Biblical Studies series by Baker Book this one is actually intended as a textbook for undergrad studies. Yet to avoid it out of fear that as a textbook it must be dry or overly technical is to make a mistake and miss out on a grand learning opportunity. This book would be wonderful for personal or small group Bible study for those with at least a fair understanding of the NT (if you're not there yet check out Encountering the New Testament in this series) and a hunger to go deeper. Study and be blessed.

I can't think of any commentary that is clearer in explaining all the implications, the connections with the Old Testament, the theological issues, practical applications....It is not too academic for the lay person using it for bible study or devotional...extremely readable.

There were aspects that I loved and others that i didn't

As other reviewers have already said, I loved the different setting and time period. I also loved the H and h, they were well written and appropriate for the time period I think. I hated the fact that right from the start of their intimate relationship there was always the sense that it was temporary and that the H would marry for political advantage. I'm convinced that it was the way of things in those times but I always like commitment when the main characters become intimate. t's not a favourite plot line for me that the other woman was waiting in the wings and was so jealous of the h. I totally didn't enjoy it when the other woman and the h had a physical fight over the h being a whore and having some jewellery from the H. This lack of commitment and uncertainty went on for way too long into the book. The ending was really good and made up for a lot though.

Not cheesy like the title!

I was pleasantly surprised in how much I enjoyed this book. I agree with the other reviewers that this is a nice change of pace for historical romance. The settings, characters and plot were refreshing. There were no (or very little) silly misunderstandings or outlandish stubbornness you come to expect from historical romance. Bad title for a very nice book

The title of this book is beyond horrible. It's almost the kind of title, even in e-format, that you are embarrassed to purchase. I'm glad I listened to other reviewers to ignore the title because the book was actually a good read. This book has it all from fight scenes and imagery to sexual tension and good character development. I was surprised at how many characters were able to be developed in a relatively short amount of time. Being an animal lover I also had an affection for the wolf. Interesting, and different setting than the usual historical romance set in England with Lords and Ladies, I think you'll find this a good read with a more realistic ending.

Physical Biochemistry: Principles and Applications

Provides a great overview of a variety of biochemical techniques. Details the instrumentation as well as many possible applications for each technique. Describes the theory in an easy-to-understand manner with a valuable amount of detail, however, if you are looking for an in depth explanation of theory for any one particular technique, this is not the book for you. If you want a simple, detailed overview of many important biochemical techniques, I found this book extremely helpful.

Wonderful patterns, but British terminology

I own Mooncie's previous book, "Crocheted Wild Animals" and have enjoyed making several patterns from that book. Mooncie tends to like big projects, which is a nice change from most Amigurumi books that favor smaller stuffies. I've bought the kindle version of the book since the paperback is not yet available, but will likely buy the paperback when it finally comes out, since it is typically easier for me to read patterns in a book. The patterns in this book are well written and I'm already halfway through my first project. The only reason I did not give five stars to this book is because it uses British terminology for stitches, rather than American terminology. Thus what I would call a single crochet stitch, she calls a double crochet stitch. Her first book had an American version, maybe this one will eventually have one too.

Definitely recommend this book

Great photos, very detailed instructions. Book includes both row-by-row instructions and charted instructions. All instructions and sizing are given in UK terms but conversions (stitches, needle size, etc) are listed at the end of the book.

Yarn is suggested by brand, would have been slightly more useful (at least to me) to list suggested yarn weight instead.

I made the shark and it looks mostly like the photos, wanted him to be a bit comical so I made large eyes and teeth, turned out the predicted size (~22", all these patterns produce sizeable stuffed animals), again very easy to follow patterns. The anglerfish is adorable, will definitely make more of these marine mates. I will probably purchase other books by this author, like the wild animal book.

LOVE this beautiful book!

The projects in this book are STUNNING! They're so cleverly designed - I'm thoroughly impressed. I love how there are diagrams and written instructions for each animal. If you're in the US, note that the crochet terms are UK. (That's perfectly okay, IMO, because the UK has masterful crochet designers and it's well-worth the 2-seconds to learn to replace dc for sc, and tr for dc.) :)

Destined to be a classic

This review pertains to both volumes of these great books, as they are really one work, two objects. It should be noted that the second volume must have been updated, as it goes to 2010, not 2009 as in the cover photo and title here.

The Karpovian boa constrictor positional style doesn't always lend itself to raving enthusiasm from chess fans. I've heard his play described as "boring" many times over the years. John Nunn, in his introduction to the unfortunately out-of-print 1996/97 edition of "Capablanca's Best Games" by Harry Golombek, writes about how struck he was by Capablanca's and Karpov's stylistic similarities (specifically: endgame excellence, ability to make something out of nothing in simplified positions, and beneficial liquidation), with the primary difference being an underlying aggression in Karpov's play that he didn't find particularly evident in Capa's.

So now here we have two books that celebrate Karpov's strategic brilliance, very specifically avoiding any quick tactical checkmate coups that would mollify those looking for more tactical oomph. Tactics are there in plenty by virtue of their interrelation with positional factors and the nature of chess analysis, but the focus is his strategic thinking, which is great - not boring - as Karpov is an extraordinarily rich subject in this regard.

Tibor Karolyi's efforts are monumental. These are not merely games with commentary. They also contain a good deal of history that bridges key moments in Karpov's career, with chapters running year-by-year and paragraphs before and after every game about what was happening with him professionally. All chapters end with a brief statistical summary of how any particular year went for Karpov. The author tries to give some (admittedly short) biographical history of the more obscure players Karpov faces in the games and others around him in his career, including a nice little interview with his childhood trainer in the first volume. The biographical material, however, is clearly secondary to the heavy doses of pure chess science.

The books are deep in instructional value, and are some of the most readable variation-heavy books I've ever come across. A great deal of this latter factor is facilitated by the superb layout and design. Variation diagrams are always given in a slightly but noticeably smaller board size than those that follow the main game continuation, and actual game moves are distinguishable by bold font as per common modern practice. This all helps to make the often exhaustive variation sections easy both to skip through and locate.

The author often details entire ancillary games or positions (including those of other players and sometimes more than one) that illustrate a point he is making relevant to the treatment of a particular strategic or tactical idea in the main game. These comparisons are invaluable and well chosen. Nothing new here in that regard, but again the depth of all of this is substantial. Improvements to players' moves (including Karpov's) and discussion of more modern treatment of theory in the older games permeate the books. If studied conscientiously all the way through, one emerges with a better sense of Karpov's methods and their evolution over time. Not an easy task with such a player, but Karolyi pretty well nails it.

The author's prose is clear and concise, interesting, and quite readable. Karolyi imparts much in the way of useful nuance to the reader with his obvious pedagogical gifts. There is plenty of descriptive commentary. It's ever-so-slightly dry in style; not Bronstein or anything. They are on the whole heavy on objective factors with just enough easy moments of subjectivity or historical addenda to make them just the kind of books this chess lover loves. The game selections are great, with both known classics and many I don't have elsewhere.

The books are solidly bound and open flat with no damage to the spine. They use fine paper and a clear, comfortable font. Production quality is very high indeed. In dimensions, the (softcover) books are roughly the same size as the more popular Gambit books (Watson's "Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy," for instance, but denser and heavier). They have an excellent hand feel because of the smooth, cool material used on the cover. The only negative I can think of regarding the physical objects is that the ink has a pretty obnoxious and unusual industrial odor when bought hot off the press.

This is that rare set that is as brilliant as its subject. These volumes should only further cement Karpov's legacy among the very top of the greats in our times. The whole project is ambitious on the part of Mr. Karolyi, and I'm thrilled to have it in my library. A+. Very highly recommended.

Intriguing Idea, Not So Great Results

I'm not normally a huge fan of Chick Lit, but the combination of a tea set and the English countryside was just too much for me to pass up.

I actually didn't particularly like or identify with any of the characters, which is really never a good sign. I just didn't really connect with any of them so my enjoyment of the book suffered a bit from that.

The idea of a group of women sharing a vintage tea set was intriguing and, frankly, more than a bit reminiscent of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I came to discover that that's really what it was. It was a Sisterhood of women at different stages of their lives and living in England. It didn't have the emotional impact of the The Sisterhood but it was well written enough to make it a tolerable read.

If you enjoy Chick Lit this will most likely prove to be an enjoyable read for you.

A Simple Tale of Friendship and Artistic Expression!

Three women are standing together but apart as they stare at a set of vintage teacups. One can feel the tension as each wants to buy the whole set but knows the others want that sale just as much. Before the reader realizes it, they come to a perfect compromise. Each will share the set for a certain period of time before the last purchaser gets to own the whole set. In the process a wonderful friendship is established and this novel is about the lives of these apparently unimportant women who live such typical and yet unique lives. Their past is as much vintage living as the cups they share, with a history and consequences worth sharing!
Jennie’s engaged to Dan and seems very content with their love. She enjoys sharing with her newfound friends but is about to receive the shock of her life when she hears from someone unexpected. And it’s not someone she wants in her life again at all!
Alison is a happily married woman with two daughters, one of who is feeling every one of her teenage oats and doesn’t mind letting her mother know it. Alison worries that her previously close relationship is falling apart but something will occur that shows Alison hasn’t lost her daughter at all. It’s a fairly common tale here but the way Alison and her friends deal with it all is what makes the friendship so valuable.
Maggie has tossed the past away along with a relationship which practically devastated her after she was rejected by the man she thought she would be living with forever. However, she’s started a new florist business which has prospered and now includes a wedding she’s planning that’s probably the largest job she’s ever had. It’s got unique challenges since it’s to be geared to an Alice in Wonderland theme, complete with mushrooms and tea party to be held in a gorgeously planned garden. The man in charge of the garden, however, Owen, is an ornery creature who seems to find a problem with Maggie’s every plan or suggestion and could definitely thwart her plans for the future as well since success with this endeavor would bode well for future business for sure.
The Vintage Teacup Club has a fairly simple plot but is no less endearing for that fact. Sometimes there can be a loveliness to a simple story that is well-told with dynamic characters and unique plot. This is just such a story and very nicely done as Vanessa Greene’s first novel.

I was looking for a book to send out to six girlfriends of various ages and interests. This book, while not a profound literary work, is a sweet tale of friendship among women of various ages and interests - perfect for my group. It's the kind of book that provides light reading for the beach or an afternoon relaxing on the deck. I purchased six copies knowing that there is something in this novel for everyone. I plan to send it to each of them with a vintage tea cup in hopes that they will pass on the book and the cup to another friend! Perfect novel for creating friendship circles.

Good Read

Half way through the omnibus and finding once again a mixture of politics and war fighting. The Grey Knights are having a really tough time of it and they are supposed to be the cream of the Space Marine crop. Lots of twists and turns, which I like, but at times the story gets muddled down with the political infighting aspect. The Inquisitors have been reduced to bickering political thugs as opposed to the Eisenhorn prototype. Liking the book overall.

Two for the price of one

This book is really two in one. The first "Leisure, The Basis of Culture" and "The Philosophical Act."
The first book starts with the premise that "the foundation of Western culture is leisure." Something not easily appreciated in our hectic life. Yet the end point of this leisure is not laziness but celebration. "The most festive festival it is possible to celebrate is divine worship." I never thought of liturgy as leisure before I read this book. Pieper makes a wonderful point that liturgy does not serve any pratical purpose. Rather liturgy carries us into another dimenension. "Carried away out of the straitness of the workaday world into the heart of the universe."
In the second book, Pieper asks the question. "What does philosophizing mean?" For Pieper it means to step outside our everday world, "to see the stars above the roof, to preserve our apprehension of the universality of things in the midst of the habits of daily life." Wonderful!

One of the most important philosophical works of the 20th Century

Reading this brief book was a life-changing experience for me. Pieper, a philosopher in the tradition of St. Thomas Aquinas, leads the reader out of the barren world of endless busy-ness, direction-less activity, and enslavement to work, by revealing the crucial significance of leisure. Leisure is not at all idleness. It is contemplation of the wonder of the world around us and of the God who created all that is. This book is very important for those of us who are drowning in the frenzied, shallow, and ultimately meaningless world of purposeless work and soulless materialism. Pieper opens up to the reader the crucial importance of leisure, which is the key to discovering the wonder and purpose of our universe and the One who made it. Reading this book is a life-changing experience, and a powerful antidote to the soulless, frenzied chaos that dominates modern life. Leisure is not a mere vacation from work; it is the key to understanding why we exist. This is not an easy work--no masterpiece is--but it is well worth the effort it takes to understand the lessons Pieper teaches, lessons that will change your life.

a rethinking of Leisure

Leisure : the Basis of culture turned out to be a great surprise to me. I never thought this read to be the philosophical work that it was. I am no student of philosophy so i found the book to be a challenge to read but well worth it to work through. Like a good movie i don't want to spoil the finale for any one interested in picking this little book up. One thing i will say ; it will change the way you think of leisure once you grasp its true definition as intended by the ancients.
