I loved this book. So much that I will be purchasing the next book in chronological order. It is gritty and paints a clear picture of life inside that jail. The writing is smooth and graphic. I could see a clear picture of his cell, his cell mates, the food, the scars and feel his mental anguish re obtaining a trial date. I sweated with him. I cried with him.
His loving family are rare treasures and stood by him. There are lots of wonderful descriptions in the book but my favourite which I highlighted was "Ace's face puckered as if a cockroach had crawled into his mouth". What a beautiful description which we can all relate to. There were many more.
Great work Shaun. I'm so glad you made it available as an eBook.

About the Author

Richard Jolly is a development economist and honorary professor and research associate of the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex, where he was director in the 1970s. He worked for the UN as an Assistant Secretary-General for almost 20 years: from 1982-95 as deputy executive director for programs of UNICEF and from 1996-2000 as special coordinator of UNDP’s Human Development Report. After leaving the UN, he was for 10 years co-director of the UN Intellectual History Project and co-author of the summary volume, UN Ideas That Changed the World. His career has combined development action, research and teaching, for the UN, for governments, and for universities. He has worked as an economist in some dozen countries and written or edited some 20 books, notably on redistribution with growth, adjustment with a human face, disarmament and development. He was knighted by the Queen in 2001 for his contributions to international development.

"if global governance is to be directed to the end of supporting a more human world and not only a more efficient global economy, actions for children need to be brought into the discussion on how to improve global governance".

The author had direct access to records and many decision makers and their colleagues for a substantial period of UNICEF history . For 15 years he was in senior positions of UNICEF and UN Development Programme (UNDP). - An example of global governance in action...rousing the interest of heads of Government not only of ministers with specific areas of responsibility..Starting with a global perspective, using UNICEF as a catalyst for politician and social mobilizations and appropriate technology for meaningful change Building consensus and commitment through mufti-station, far flung 100 country offices.

A fine and readable survey of academic ecology

This book presents a survey of the academic subdivisions of the science of ecology. Gives some general information and then a chapter on each of 6 different specializations in the science, viz., landscape, ecosystem, physiological, behavioral, population and community ecology, written by pofessional ecologists. Especially valuable for someone wishing to study ecology in school who wonders what exactly the various subfields deal with and consist of. Also enjoyable for anyone wanting to learn about the aims, problems, approaches and results of ecology as an academic endeavor. Includes sections on how the subfields are linked together. Includes a glossary and many references.

I like it

I really like the way they organize this book. For me, a environmental management study person, this book gives a very clear sketch of Ecology. It also very good to read articles from so many good ecologist from diferent angles. I strongly recommand this book to those who want to know what have been discussed and covered in the subject of Ecology, and how we can link these ideas and knowledge to our life or other studies.

What a terrible book - not only is it difficult to read - but missing much of common Ecology viewpoints and basics. Worthless, absolutely worthless - anyone want to by mine - cost of postage. If not, I'll just burn it.

Wisconsin's Past and Present

If only every state had this kind of historical atlas to put its society, economy, and all other aspects of its past into historical perspective. The map selection is detailed and thorough, the map drawings are crisp and presetable. The text fully supports the maps. The book covers settlement, origianl native tribes, the economic growth, the development of counties, it even covers which NFL football teams either have in the past or are presently training in Wisconsin. It covers the little known milk strikes (little known outside of Wisconsin) of 1933.

I was a bit skeptical at first because every volume I found in bookstores had a plastic wrap around the book making it impossible to review its contents before I purchased it. The price was also a bit steep. But Amazon was about $15 less than bookstores so I figured I'd take the chance and purchase it. I was not disappointed. Again, all states should have dedicated cartographers who want to explain their state's history in maps. It may not be the end all books on Wisconsin's history, but by reading this book one comes away with a feel for what the Wisconsin experience was all about. I highly recommend this book.

Not an accurate book from a Luxembourger's point of view

While I appreciate many sections of the book, the authors make the age-old mistake of equating Luxembourger immigrants with Germans or Germanic-speaking peoples. That's like equating the Finns with Russians by virtue of geographic location. It just is not accurate. Luxembourgers settled in Ozaukee County as early as 1845 or so. They did not then and still do not today equate themselves with being German in any manner or form! In fact, many immigrants from the Palatinate, Hesse, the Trier area, etc., considered themselves to be more like Luxembourgers in identity.
Luxembourgers have a unique, rich history all of their own and it is constantly overlooked by those not versed in Luxembourg history or immigration. So here we have another book where they as a unique ethnic population are non-entities---this would not happen if they were American Indians, that's for sure. Luxembourgers had one of the largest 19th century immigration settlements of the United States in what was old Washington County and would become Ozaukee County in 1853.
And are these authors SURE that the first cheese factory was in Sheboygan Falls? That's not the way I hear it living here in Ozaukee County, but that's open to interpretation.

Highly recommended

As a student of Wisconsin's natural and human history all my life, this book is a Godsend for its fine graphics and outstanding presentation of historical minutiae. I particularly appreciate its statewide focus that avoids Madisonian or Milwaukeean parochialism. "One must caress the details, the divine details" - The authors have done this in this obvious labor of love. Probably one of the top five books ever written on the geography and history of Wisconsin.
