Great story

I've been waiting for this book to come out. The first two volumes in the trilogy were excellent, so I had high expectations. I was not disappointed. The saga of Alexander and Crassus came to a fitting end. Alexander makes a good narrator for the failure of the Parthian campaign, perhaps because as a Greek he understands the meaning of hubris. I read the book on my kindle fire and the illustrated glossary worked well and was greatly appreciated. Thank you, Andrew Levkoff.

Pride goes before the fall

This is the last of "The Bow of Heaven" trilogy, and that means (sadly) that Alexandros's scrolls come to an end. For this novel, I do think it helps to read the previous installment, although there are some brief explanations along the way for readers who are picking up the story of Alexandros for the first time. He is the chief slave of Marcus Crassus, who, bent on vengeance and to prove his military mettle, has set out to subdue Parthia and rob its riches. With overwhelming numbers on his side, his hubris ends up being his undoing. Alexandros tries to be the voice of reason in this tale and has an uncanny way of negotiating both sides of this conflict.

It is not possible to give 4 1/2 stars, or that would have been my rating, because this book was a compelling read. The part that I personally would have preferred is if the author had spent just a little less time on military tactics and given a more comprehensive view of what happens to Alexandros after Parthia instead. I don't know if it is because I am a female reader, and therefore more interested in the machinations of the household and the private lives of Alexandros and the other characters than in the military exploits, but that is where my personal preferences lie.

Nevertheless, this was a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy and leaves me thinking of Alexandros and his friends for some time! I hope Levkoff will write further novels set in ancient Rome, because he has a talent for bringing it to life for his readers.

Compelling Read, Great on the Kindle

Three for three! There's a lot of juicy history and wonderful character development. My kind of book: foreshadowing lets you know it's all going to come out all right, but still the narrative has suspense and tension. One of those books -- actually trilogies -- that is so engaging that I race to the end, yet when it's over, I go around for the next few days wishing I hadn't finished it so soon. Just possibly, the second in the trilogy is a little better crafted, and the wit is a little dryer. I want more of Levkoff (and apparently, I'll get it.) Reading on a Kindle was perfect, because of all the unusual words and places: click, and something tell you what it is (most of the time.)

About the Author
Immanuel Ness is professor of political science at Brooklyn College, City University of New York, and a founding member of the Lower East Side Community Labor Organization, an autonomous activist organization in New York City. His research and writing focuses on social and revolutionary movements, labor militancy, and migrant worker resistance to oppression. Ness has just completed Guest Workers, Corporate Despotism and Resistance,(forthcoming University of Illinois Press) a book that examines the rise of guest workers from the global South in the US and labor opposition to employer abuses. He is author of numerous books including an anthology of contemporary labor: Real World Labor, with Amy Offner and Chris Sturr (Dollars & Sense). He edits the peer-review quarterly journal, Working USA: The Journal of Labor and Society, and has also edited several reference works, including the International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest: 1500 to the Present, and, with Aaron Brenner and Bejamin Day, the Encyclopedia of Strikes in American History.

Dario Azzellini is a writer, documentary director and political scientist and lecturer at Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria. He splits his time between Berlin and Caracas. His research and writing focuses on social and revolutionary militancy, migration and racism, people’s power and selfadministration, and workers control, with extensive case studies in Latin America. He served as Associate Editor for the the International Encyclopedia of Revolution and Protest: 1500 to the Present, and was primary editor for Latin America, the Spanish Caribbean, and the new left in Italy. He serves as Associate Editor for WorkingUSA: The Journal of Labor and Society and for Cuadernos de Marte, an academic publication about war sociology released by the University of Buenos Aires. He has published several books, among them The Business of War (Assoziation A 2002), about the privatization of military services. His latest documentary Comuna under construction (2010) examines worker councils in Venezuela.

Ours to Master and to Own is fantastic- it's chock full of case studies on the subject of worker's control covering different revolutions and movements. It's a great read. Also, on a shallow note the book itself is really lovely to hold in the hands, so it's worth having on your shelf rather than just as a pirated PDF. The book's organization makes it possible to pick out particular instances from history without having to slog through 200 pages of academic writing, but not at the expense of rigor of course. You're going to love this book. It's probably timely too because Richard Wolff just put out Democracy at Work: a Cure for Capitalism, which apparently discusses several contemporary studies of businesses owned and operated by workers., but the book in question will draw your attention to the specific problems worker's counsels have faced in the past. I highly recommend Ours to Master and to Own for anyone interested in how folks dealt with organizing their work place, the kinds of problems they encountered (counterrevolutionary unions, in-fighting, etc), and whether or not the claim that 'vanguards' are really impositions from above (isn't this the zombie chant we've all heard a million times before?) . You'll be pleasantly surprised!

A wonderful resource but a misleading cover

If this book had been marketed differently, it would have received 5 stars from me. I struggled with the rating but I cannot understand why the publisher would put a picture of Hulk Hogan on the cover when his name appears only 3-4 times in the book? It seems deceptive as a picture of Bruno Sammartino, Nature Boy Buddy Rogers or Vince McMahon, Sr. would have been much more appropriate.

With that out of the way, I would like to say that this book is an excellent resource for pro wrestling historians. The book really picks up momentum after the halfway mark and tells the story of the WWWF in the pre titan sports days. This book must have been a labor of love for the author and I commend and thank him for it.

I do have one additional quibble- the information about Jess McMahon was fascinating but it seems to get lost in the author setting the context for that time period. It almost seemed like Jess had to be pushed as if he was more prominent than he was to make the premise of the book work.

I'd love to see more historical pieces by this author. I did read his NWA book, which was great as well.

Before Steve Austin, before Hulk Hogan, before Vince McMahon, there was... another Vince McMahon

Impeccably researched, this book details the history of pro wrestling in the 1900's before the Hulkamania and Attitude eras of the 80's and 90's. Focused on the McMahon family (Vince McMahon's father and grandfather), the author digs into the growth of the Northeast territory and all the political, competitive, and internal struggles along the way, including the rise and fall of wrestlers like Buddy Rogers and Bruno Sammartino. It's interesting to learn how these wrestlers came to be champions; many times the titles were determined as much by loyalty and backstage machinations as by their in-ring abilities and crowd appeal.

This was the era when wrestling was "real," meaning that it was not openly acknowledged to be entertainment, and the promoters had little reason to keep notes or proper records. The last major national promotion, the WWE, does little to acknowledge its heritage prior to the 1980's, either. The author is to be commended for pulling together this history in spite of these limitations, relying on newspaper clippings and interviews to compile the facts. At times the prose is a bit dry, but this work will appeal to wrestling enthusiasts who want to learn more about the sport's history and how the WWE got to be the force that it is today.

Great book by Tim Hornbaker. Tim always does amazing research on his books and this one is no different. An amazing walk through the twentieth century and the McMahon Family's rise to power in professional wrestling with the WWWF,WWF & WWE. Truly an informative read and one that people who want to understand how wrestling works (and how it came to be), should read. Great job Tim and I highly recommended this book!

The Benediction of Brother Cadfael

This is a wonderful introduction to the joyous world of Brother Cadfael, 12th century monk and amateur sleuth.
The second book, especially is a solid beginning of the Cadfael journey. It is my all time favourite.
Stunningly written it is a gentle clever read without any of the gratuitous violence, sex and nastiness so prevalent in most novels.
Books for adult, teenager and child alike.

A wonderful coffee-table book about your favorite monk.

"The Benediction of Brother Cadfael" is a wonderful introduction for anyone unfamiliar with the murder-solving "Brother Herbalist" of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul in Shrewsbury. It also makes a wonderful gift for those already in love with the good brother.
This oversized volume contains the complete text of the first two "Brother Cadfael" novels, seperated by a lovely illustrated section discussing medieval Benedictine life, Shrewsbury, the Welsh border, St. Winifrid, the Abbey (which is still in existence) and other items of interest.
Enjoy this wonderful book. A solid four stars.
