The strip-mining of human nature

Written at the cusp of the 'consumer revolution', this book is both a quaint historical piece and a prophesy of what was to come. The tangential thesis of the book is that by the mid-fifties, the standard problems in capitalism -- those of production and distribution of goods -- were solved, but that this introduced another problem: all of these goods must be consumed. So, it became necessary to step up the techniques used to market these goods.
Advertising was nothing new, but the psychological intricacy and sophistication in it was ratcheted up significantly. Using Freud, Jung, and whatever other foundation proved workable, social scientists and psychoanalysts honed their skills to develop an ever-growing repertoire of tricks that would induce us all to spend and consume at ever-higher levels.
Two things make the book relevant today: 1) nothing has changed either in the economic situation or in the techniques, except that both have become even more intense (two thirds of the 2002 U.S. GNP depends on consumer spending); and 2) no other book has yet come forward to do a better job at showing, in great anecdotal detail and for a broad audience, what depth marketing is all about.

A deep look into the mind....

The Hidden Persuaders explores the dark world of advertising and the effects it has upon our minds. Even though it was written originally in 1957, most of its material is still relevant today. At first, one may be lead to the conclusion Vance Packard has gone off the far end with his accusations of subliminal mind control, but he provides so much factual data you finally come to realize this isn't any joking matter. Everyone should read this book, at least to become familiar with its theme, and to increase personal awareness of the underlying messages our minds are exposed to every day. Packard will help you understand virtually hundreds of ways corporations get you to give away your hard earned money readily. He explains not only how companies make you tick, but why they make you tick. After reading the book, you will never watch another commercial or listen to another advertisement the same.

THE HIDDEN PERSUADERS by Vance Packard stands as one of the more eye-opening accounts of the development of the motivational sciences in the 20th Century. What is being described by Packard is the evolution of a systematic relationship between merchandisers of America's then-booming manufacturing industries who teemed up with Madison Avenue-style advertising firms, who themselves were backed by a network of behavioral scientists. As described by Packard, this network not only developed novel and creative ways of reaching into the psyche of its intended target audiance to tap into hidden motivations; but in the process of turning us all into more compliant consumers, so shifted the values of the entire society that they changed American society for all time. Today many of us have virtually succumbed our natural "reality" to a phony existance based upon presenting an image of ourselves to our peers that is actually based upon media and market-generated values. Once we understand the process that created this vast consumer culture, with all it's attendant neuroses, we can then begin to fashion for ourselves a strategy for recovering our basic humanity. What is being described in THE HIDDEN PERSUADERS, is the origins of a system to manipulate us out of that humanity.

About the Author

Richard L. Wheeden is Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey, USA. His primary research interests lie in the fields of classical harmonic analysis and partial differential equations, and he is the author or coauthor of more than 100 research articles. After earning his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, Illinois, USA (1965), he held an instructorship there (1965–1966) and a National Science Foundation (NSF) Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, USA (1966–1967).

Antoni Zygmund was Professor of Mathematics at the University of Chicago, Illinois, USA. He was earlier a professor at Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts, USA, and the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. His years at the University of Chicago began in 1947, and in 1964, he was appointed Gustavus F. and Ann M. Swift Distinguished Service Professor there. He published extensively in many branches of analysis, including Fourier series, singular integrals, and differential equations. He is the author of the classical treatise Trigonometric Series and a coauthor (with S. Saks) of Analytic Functions. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, District of Columbia, USA (1961), as well as to a number of foreign academies.

Very worthwhile if taken with a grain of salt

I appreciated almost all of what was offered, especially from a Christian perspective. However, I was getting tired of the man playing the chump in most of the anecdotes. Maybe that is how they all fell, but in the interest of a more level balance they could have swapped the genders occasionally without us being any the wiser.

About the Author

Dr. Gill Robinson Hickman�is professor emerita in the Jepson School of Leadership Studies, University of Richmond. An inaugural faculty member of the Jepson School, she participated in its institution building and course development and has held positions as dean, professor of Public Administration, and Human Resource director. She has published several books and numerous articles/book chapters in the field of leadership studies. Her experience has led to invitations as presenter at the China Executive Leadership Academy�Pudong (CELAP), Shanghai, China; the Leadership in Central Europe Conference at Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic; and a panel member at international conferences in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Guadalajara, Mexico, and Canada. She was a faculty presenter at the prestigious Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg, Austria and at the University of the Western Cape in South Africa where she presented a conceptual framework for leadership and transformation for regional governments in South Africa.

About the Author

Eli C. Minkoff is Professor of Biology at Bates College. He received his bachelor's degree, Magna Cum Laude, from Columbia University and his MA and PhD from Harvard University. A member of Phi Beta Kappa and the Society for the Study of Evolution, Dr. Minkoff has published several books as well as many articles in scholarly journals and encyclopedic reference works.

Pamela J. Baker is Professor of Biology at Bates College. She holds two Bachelor of Science degrees (from the University of Wales at Swansea, Magna Cum Laude, and from Bates College, Cum Laude). She also holds an MA and PhD from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Her research focuses on the function of the immune system in bone diseases such as periodontal disease and on the investigation of new antimicrobial agents.

Nice try, but (sadly) no cigar!

The authors write in an engaging and animated style, and the "issues approach" to biology introduced in this text is an excellent way to introduce the material. Non-science students in particular will benefit from such interesting-- and sometimes even exciting-- demonstrations of the importance of the topics covered.
Unfortunately, the book fails to live up to its ideal, and does so right from the start. Chapter One, for example, is so full of mistakes, oversimplifications and downright silliness that I would be embarrassed to assign it to my students! There are errors of dates, misleading definitions of concepts (sometimes even conflicting with the books own glossary), and inept treatments of non-scientific concerns (ethics and religion). The "thought questions" throughout the book frequently tend to be written in leading ways that suggest which answers will be "acceptable." Although the book tries hard to bridge "the two cultures," the reader is constantly reminded that science is one thing (defined by its rigorous method), and all other human efforts are "other" (nonfalsifiable, therefore "anything goes"!)
As a biology text, this is quite successful. Topics and explanations are accurate, clear and simple. It is a pity that the authors' laudable attempt to connect the science to significant social, ethical, and political issues is not similarly clear and well-informed. I fear that in the long run such carelessness may do more harm than good.

Profound, Moving, and Needed

I stumbled across Boreham and I can tell I will never be the same as a result of the encounter. I remember being about about 1/3 of the way through this book thinking, "This has to be the most impactful thing I have read, outside of Scripture, in the last 10 years." And that is not hyperbole. His take on Scripture is fresh and hit me like a hammer. In a day when pastor after pastor continues to recycle the same anecdotes and illustrations, Boreham stands as the conspicuous novelty. Read it. Then join me on the journey to read everything his pen touched.

Inspirational

This is great devotional material. I've always enjoyed history and it is neat to see how various scripture passages have influenced history. I frequently share from scripture during breaking of bread meeting at the Bible Chapel that I attend. This book has been an excellent source of inspiration for thoughts to share.
